OK, I can't hold it any more....
I have no problem with hunting, and I got 7 Grouse this fall (during open season, and with a license).... but I don't think it is in the best interest of this forum, or hunting in general, to allow the posting of pics of someone gunning down a Cedar Waxwing and a Red-Shafted Flicker....
As responsible hunters, we need to be sensitive to the multitude of people who would ban all airguns.... not give them ammunition to use against us.... Some birds are pests (like the Starling you got).... others are not, and most are beneficial.... Virtually all are protected by law unless they are specifically allowed to be hunted.... PLEASE, guys, let be sensible about what we talk about and especially the photos we post here....
JMO, not looking for a flame war here....
Bob

Bob, thanks for mentioning.
Even though I moderate this section, I can't know for sure if a bird is legal to hunt or not, or when it is legal to hunt, etc. I'm not a great fan of pictures of kills either, but the forum policy doesn't nessecarily go against it.
Mr. Petersen, I hope you know what you are doing and keeping things legal, I have absolutely no eyes on that and I expect that you look into your local hunting laws before you go hunting.
It's the hunter's responsibility to keep it clean, not the forum. It is, however, my job to keep this forum clean. So I will discuss this with the other mods.
I'm sure we'll work it out. |

| The starling is fine, and I've shot a number of those small grey ones with the yellow feathers on its underside too. I'm pretty sure those aren't protected either. But you may have shot some song birds with those other ones. I know its tempting to shoot whatever target presents itself, but you may want to be more discriminating. |

Personally, I take exception to that- I'm no bird expert and I was going to ask what that rather colorful bird was- it didn't look like a typical "nuisance" animal. But suggesting the forum "allows" things that might be construed as illegal or completely unethical is unfair.
If these birds are have indeed been classified as "nuisance" animals by a local game warden and permission has been issued to shoot them (I am assuming they are not protected otherwise the game warden could find himself in a pile of trouble too) there's really not alot we can say about it. Most places in the world allow for certain exemptions for "nuisance" animals depending on what they're doing. Maybe where the palm trees fly high birds like this are a real problem at times and thus they are able to be controlled legally. ssgtpetersen has indicated this essentially (now). I do not, however, appreciate accusations being thrown around. If it was so readily obvious to some people that these birds could be an issue because of what they are, it could have been pointed out earlier and/or privately before finger-pointing starts. |

My sincere apologies if in fact the birds taken were nuisance animals....
All I can say in my defense is that in BC (where I am familiar with the laws), all wildlife is protected (may not be hunted, killed, captured, kept as pets, etc.) unless listed in the hunting regulations.... Some animals can be taken ONLY for the of purpose protecting property (unless in season), but a hunting license is required (Schedule B): there are no birds on that list.... Some animals can be taken by anyone, anytime (no hunting license required) because they are pests: house sparrows, starlings, and rock doves are the only birds in that list (Schedule C).... others in Schedule C require a hunting license unless you are hunting them on your property or they are damaging your property: crows, black-billed magpies, and the brown-headed cowbird are the only animals on that list....
Therefore, other than gamebirds in season, the only birds that can be captured or killed in BC are: house sparrow, starling, rock dove, crow, black-billed magpie, and brown-headed cowbird.... PERIOD....
As I said, I don't wish to cause a flame war here.... If someone wants to PM me a copy of the regulations allowing those birds to be taken in the area they were killed, I'd love to see it....
I've said my piece, and it was intended to prevent criticism from non-hunters, for no other reason.... let's let this thread die....

It always comes down to this with the bird hunting it seems. Since birds are so prevalent, whether it be nuissance or song birds, they are often the targets of airgun shooters. They are really just shot for sport and not for pest control or food purposes (although some hunters here like me and cw do hunt for pest control and food).
The illegal shooting of birds is a very common practice among a lot of airgun hunters, especially since laws relating to airgun hunting are often times unclear. Whether or not you feel those laws are justifiable or whether you think they apply to you personally is another matter. However, the general consensus here is to not post pictures of birds or any other animals that are illegal to hunt.
I don't think that it would ever be used against us, but it does seem to offend some members and it can lead to flame wars. |

| If it's outright illegal- definitely not cool to post it, or talk about it here. |
