You mean someone might take offense at a guy giggling and smirking with the not-yet-dead animal twitching in the background?
Back to the PBA business -
I have in front of me a clipping from "American Rifleman," December 2006, p. 63. It's a review of the Gamo NRA Recon (and also the Gamo NRA Nitro 17). The Recon pushed an 8.3 grain Gamo Hunter pellet out at 487 FPS, which is 4.4 FPE. It pushed a 5.1 grain PBA Raptor pellet out at 496 FPS, which is 2.8 FPE. In this gun (a Gamo, by the way) there was only a 2% increase in velocity, and a 36% decrease in energy. Accuracy was about the same, with the Raptor pellet shooting a 1.63" (10 meter) group, and the Hunter shooting a 1.57" group.
I calculated the energy values; the author of the article said they were both 3 FPE. This suggests that he needs new batteries for his abacus. But the point is that in this gun, the PBA pellet was not the "magic bullet."
Then there is the Nitro 17. 792 FPS and a 1.10" group for the 8.3 grain Hunter pellets. 1055 FPS and a 1.30" group for the 5.1 grain PBA pellets. This is a 9% increase in FPE for the PBA pellets, which I'm willing to accept as different efficiencies in translating the energy of the spring. So in this gun we have a velocity increase, roughly the same energy, and an 18% larger group. Again, not the "magic bullet." |

That is, without a doubt, one of the most absurd and offensive things ever done by an airgun manufacturer. If there's a reason to not deal with a specific manufacturer based on morals- that whole killing a boar with a .177 air rifle with these "magic pellets" was definitely it. |
I hope what I wrote did'nt offend any of you,I just thru that in for sarcasm.
This is the way I'm thinking,Gamo PBA pellets seem to cater to the young. When I was 12 years old and if I saw an advertisment like that,I would beg my mom to buy them for me,no dought because I would'nt know any better.
The way Gamo advertises them makes the pellets look like can do the job of a 30-06,but in a small, cheap package.
And can I say something that is right in line with this topic to see how you feel about it without getting scowlded at?It's still about hunting. |

| Nothing wrong with mine! It doesn't like the PBA pellets but that's because it's an 18flb and not a 12flb gun I think! They tend to shudder the whole gun so I have 49 PBAs to give away if you want to come to Spain to collect! As for the video, that's based in America and not Spain so I'd imagine it's not how the Spanish would like to see their pellets used! (But I could be wrong) Here, it is illigal to shoot anything that breaths with an air rifle especially wild boar! The Spanish tend to hold their wild boar in high esteame and would only use a gun capable of a quick dispatch and not a .177 PBA pellet! Bad shooting practice is regarded with distain! |

Keep on posting! If you notice, the negativity is directed towards Gamo and their marketing strategies, not you. I hope it didn't make you feel out of place, because there is a place for you here. Stupid questions? No such thing. Divergent opinions? All of us here ride the short bus. |

This is what I wrote earlier but did'nt post,
Please forgive me for what I'm about to say.I am in no way saying it is OK to hunt with an under power rifle for the game you are taking. But I have heard too many stories about a guy shooting a deer with an arrow and it goes thru,or what ever and they have to track it down, sometimes a few hours and it is still alive. They pull out thier knife and slit the throat. But an arrow don't kill a deer quickly like a 30-06.Tell me,whats so humane about that.
Plus I've seen those hunting videos where the guy shoots one with a bow and it runs off aways and bleeds to death.
What do ya'll think about that?(don't get me wrong,I'm not against hunting)
I'm not saying it's OK to do that, but things like that happen when hunting.Clean and quick kills don't always happen.
I said all that to the post that says the "hog thing" gives airgunners a bad rap, maybe so.But there people out there that want to outlaw any kind of hunting be it firearms, archery, airguns and fishing.Yes,I read some where that a group wanted to ban fishing because hooks hurt the fish.
I don't hunt,so maybe some of you that do can give your input. |

A bow can kill a deer as quickly as a 30-06, given adequate skill and proper circumstances (i.e., range). It's the hunter's job to use the appropriate equipment, develop the skill, and manage the circumstances. True, things don't always work out as planned, but I think ethical hunting hinges on the intent to do it right.
The Gamo guy's intent clearly was not on ethical hunting. Any .177 airgun is ethically inadequate for a 250 pound animal. And to laugh for the camera while the animal twitches in the background shows that his intent was only to sell Gamo products.
I don't think we disagree, especially regarding the potential impact of the video on public perception of the sport.
The more I think about this, the more I'm convinced to never buy Gamo again, simply because of that video. |

People are better of with rifles from brands like BSA, Air Arms, Weihrauch and Diana anyway.
At least, when you're into springers. |

| i had actually been considering purchasing the Gamo Hunter Extreme .22 , but after i saw that video, i'm sorry, but i cant bring myself to support a company that i consider to be irresponsible. as for the reference to the bow hunt where the deer takes an hour to bleed out.... yea anyone who has ever shot anything knows that sometimes things happen like that.... but we dont need to have a commercial documenting the event!!! if someone made a broad head that was so effective that even a loin shot would eventually cause the animal to bleed to death... would you want to see a video proving that it COULD be done? personally, i think the ad director needs to be fired, the executive that OKed the ad should be removed..... and a formal apology to anyone that saw it should be issued. |

I agree that shooting an animal as big(and tough) as that hog with that air rifle is UNETHICAL and INHUMANE ! What if it is just wounded ? You'll not get another brain shot, and body shots won't even slow him down.
Truman, I'll bet the hog hunters in Spain use high-powered rifles, as they should everywhere for this kind of hunting. With enough "knock out" power, as Taylor called it, mentioned by Redfeather(that was a good post, by the way), they can be killed quickly.
I can add yet another reason to question Gamo's marketing practices: Ever see Gamo's ad in magazines wherein the caption read "Shoot all day for a dollar" ? They were referring to the PT80 or some other CO2 gun. How many shots can you shoot for $1 ? Not many !
Please accept my application for membership in the Gamo-bashers club ! |
