Hey all-

I can't seem to find this info on the web, so I wonder if someone out here knows.

I hear that the Daisy Red Ryder is supposedly "youth" or child-size proportions. I guess the only proportion that matters much is length of pull. The whole gun is 35.4" long which is typical carbine length.

It appears that my 1077 has a length of pull of about 13.6" or so. A Ruger 10/22 has about a 14" length of pull. I pulled a photo of a Red Ryder and made some crude measurements using Visio and blowing up the picture to scale and measured the length of pull in the photo at about 13.6", or very nearly the same as my 1077. I also found one reference to Daisy Red Ryder length of pull reporting it at about 13-5/8" which matches my crude measurements.

This 13.6" is actually kind of typical for an adult sized rifle, if I am doing my research correctly.

Likewise in my crude measurements, it looks like the 1077 and RR have about the same drop at the comb, and the stock is physically larger on the 1077 so it has about an inch more drop at the heel.

So what exactly is "youth" sized about a Red Ryder?

In a word - Weight.

It's quite light for younger smaller shooters, but I agree with your analysis of LOP and Comb. I don't have the gun handy(to measure) but I have compared it previously to a QB target stock (Adult sized gun, but with a generally considered shorter LOP for standing target work) and it's pretty close to the same, as I remember it.

If you're looking for somthing that is truely "Youth Sized" have a look at the Daisy "Buck"; LOP on that gun is much shorter, and it fits my 6yo son virtually perfectly. He can shoot the RRyder as well, but he much prefers the "fit" of the Buck. His Buck shoots just a wee bit stronger than my RRyder at about 285 fps. It doesn't sound very fast, but it is enough to "through hole" pop cans at even 15yards.

HTH's Good Luck!

Thanks, that does help.

On the contrary, I am not looking for a youth sized gun. I am looking for something that will shoot without reloading or manually operating a bolt (just cocking) BBs at 10-12 yards hitting soda cans, and that fits adults in the 5'6"-6'0" range. I was not looking at a Red Ryder because of the "youth size" misnomer.

I think one will be perfect for my younger daughter.

I like to have a LOP slightly less than the distance from the crook in my elbow to the farthest joint on my trigger finger. In my case that comes out to be 15 1/4."

That's a very long LOP. Is there any commercial rifle that comes that way off the shelf? Maybe some shotguns...

We looked at one today. Man that stock is THIN. And that is a very lightweight BB gun. But, it is certainly large enough for me and my tall girls to shoot.

You're right, it is thin and light - and if you're not careful, it might end up being one of your favorite shooters. Laughing

I never had one as a kid, so whe I bought my son a Buck for his birthday last spring, I bought a RRyder for myself, just for giggles, and to keep the playing field more even when we shoot together.

I was not prepared for how much fun that gun was gonna be to shoot - it holds nearly an entire weekend of BB's in one fill, and other than an occassional drop of oil, there's nothing else to do, but shoot the dickens out of it!

I've pulled them out at the lake, and had several impromptu little shooting competitions with "adults" (tall kids like myself Mr. Green ), and virtually all of them were surprised that a "BB" gun could whack cans so handily, and after getting used to it a bit, how deep of range they'd "score" at. A few of my lake friends have since bought RRyders for themselves, under the auspices of being for the "kids". They are pound for pound, the funnest guns I own. . . . . .

Remeber; Don't shoot your eye out! Laughing

LoL! That's the same story my dad told about when he bought his Red Ryder. He says everyone always wants to shoot it. We are going camping tomorrow thru the weekend out at my dad's place and we are going to borrow his RR and try it out. I am sure it will be quite addictive to shoot. I plan on putting one in my 11-year-old's stocking this year Smile

We went out shooting the 1077 while I was running a script today. We shot about 100 rounds. It is cool but we had to take off the red dot sight to make it more fun. It takes almost no skill to hit the bullseye at 15 yards with the red dot. Just line up the dot, pull the trigger. I think we will like shooting a RR at least as much. I am going to have to find a way to get some more distance involved with the 1077 in the yard.

Later-

Well, you can add more distance, or you can shoot at smaller targets. . . . .

It's been my experience that "kids" (young and old) really enjoy shooting at "reactive" targets vs. just shooting a paper. Pop cans are great, cause after you knock them down, the bottoms are a little more challenging to hit than the full side profile.

For a real challenge - my favorite target - set up paintballs on golf tees! I picked up a 3000 box of balls on sale at a clearance center for $15 (IIRC- cheap whatever they were) and a few bulk bags of 100 golf tees from Wally World (~$1.79/bag) and I set these up at assorted distances. First I shoot the paintballs, then sometimes I shoot the golf tee's. Dollar store plastic spoons stuck into the ground are a great option as well - 50-100 for a Dollar. Paintballs are a bit messy immediately after a session, but after a short rain, they just melt into the earth.

If you're at all limited by distance - just pick smaller "bullseye's". Start closer at first, then move the targets back a bit. If you can hit 5 for 5 in a row PBalls with opens at 15 yards, then you have way better skills than I do . . . . . . . Laughing

I did manage 5 for 5 at about 7.5 yards with the RRyder once, but that was easily more luck than skill, as that gun won't group .68" (PBall caliber) on paper at that distance. Usually with the RRyder, it's 3-10 shots per ball, regardless of the distance. . . . . . Either way, for some silly reason, it's a stupid amount of fun!

HTH's, Good Luck!
