Hi 23ib0d0n, I don't think we have cornered the market in partical board, the problem is we import most of our timber and it is very expensive so it is probably cheaper tonmake MDF, an 8x4x1/2" SOB sheet costs the equivalent of 22$ Canadian over here. Anyway I thought you had plenty of timber in Canada every time we see a picture of Canada it is of a tree covered mountain.

Not sure of the exchange, but I just bought 10 sheets of 4'x8'x15/32" pine laminate for just under $100 US here at the Lowe's in Camden, SC week before last. Some of it is as rough as OSB but it seems to hold up ok to the rip saw. OSB was about $6 but the particle board was $23, just can't figure out what was so special about that sawdust. |

Probably something to do with all the home reno shows on TV- things like "Trading Spaces" and all that- they've convinced anyone who's never before picked up a saw or a hammer that "MDF" is fantastic stuff- which those "decoration" shows on a budget always used due to it's (previously, apparently) lower cost. Perhaps this is just an example of how the lowest-common denominator drives the market. That's OK with me if it drives the price of plywood down- but it seems like it may have only driven the price of particle board up! And your $100 (US) is equivalent to about $108 Canadian and £50 British Pound Sterling. |

Hi All
Yes, Wood is such a rip-off these days!!
Though I get mine from builders merchants like "Tudors" or "Jewsons", Which are usually a bit cheaper than major DIY stores Like "B&Q", Also builders merchants seem to know what they're talking about.
I hate it when things cost more than they're worth!!!
