The past 40 years, airguns have hugely been developed allowing more powerfull guns against affordable prices. There are rifles that are capable of going past 35 Joule.

Now, for a while, some Dutch airgunners have been working on a format for 100 Meter air shoots, with very nice results. They generally agree that 35 Joule is enough for 100 meter shooting with an airgun, however I've seen rifles doing 20 joules and still getting good groupings at 100 meters.

The rifles are capable of going there, and so are some shooters.

Anyway, why I started this thread here:

How about the US? Is there an "official" 100 meter format for matches for airguns over there? Or any other place for that matter.

Never hurts to ask around. Someone's buying enough air rifles to warrent stores carrying the $200 and higher ones. Hell, Cabela's would be offering an RWS modle 54. Has to be sales, or it doesn't pay to have an item taking up shelf space.

And if there's enough interest, perahps we could start local clubs?

Then why use a bow and arrow or crossbow, when rifles are many times more powerful and more effective/accurate?

Why use a crossbow? When you can go running after an animal, then just jab it with a spear!

Why use a spear ? You can simply leap from a tree with a flint knife held between your teeth.

I know, I should have taken pics. To say that I was amazed would be an understatment. When my new order of pellets comes in I'll try and get out and do an "official" measured 100 yards with the same gun but I seriously doubt that I will be able to replicate those results with that gun again, ever.

100 meters will a Crosman Phantom?!? I find that hard to believe. Not that you couldn't do it, but that the Crosman could reach that far with anything even vaguely resembling consistency.

Maybe he had the wind in his back? Allthough I also think that 100 meters IS a bit far away.

The thing is, though, that the guy I bought my Diana 48 from, has used a 48/52 for 100 meter shooting, and he got pretty good groups, so to say. I'll come up with some groups once he posts them.

I doubt my Dianer will do the same. I tested it and I'll put the results in the Diana 48 thread so we might discuss it.

CW - that sounds like fun! Low-tech Tannerite.

Mine are "pre-perforated," which is to say I found them left behind at the range. I doubt my pellets will ever penetrate the steel, but they make a clearly audible sound - even at 100 yards.

With my G1 I connect about 80% of my propane tank shots at 100 yards (from a rest). With two liter pop bottles, maybe 50%. This is provided the wind isn't over about 15 mph. And provided that the weather has been dry for a few days - I use the puffs of dust in the target berm to tell where I'm hitting. Neither my equipment nor myself are good enough to just dial in a shot and hit on the first try.

Once I had a 5 shot, 5" group at 100 yards with my Slavia (7 fpe). That was in a dead calm, right at dusk when the sun wasn't causing thermals. And on a day when dumb luck was oozing out of the ground. Drag stabilized, low energy, subsonic projectiles aren't the best choice for that range.

So I can believe BCSteel's claim for a one time success, but to do that day in and day out would be a miracle. Small changes in the environment mean huge variations at the target. Competition at that distance would probably look like the old Creedmore matches, where people would wait hours between shots for the right conditions.

On the other hand, I would encourage anyone reading this to go right out and try it! All those esoteric concepts like reading the wind, the Magnus effect, etc. suddenly become very real. And while it may not earn any more respect for airguns, the PB shooters next to you will elevate you to the pantheon of shooting gods.

You need to get a Condor. Then we can have some 100+ yard
matches.

Why a Condor? There are tons of rifles that will do great at that distance. Most are PCP's, but there are also a couple of springers that can do the job, with the right tuning.
