I am no expert, but I just got a new (to me) refurbished .22 Model 460. I haven't chronoed it yet as it does not have 200 pellets through it since I got it. It is scoped with a Leupold Compact Lightweight Vari-X II 3-9x40mm Extended Focussing Range. I also have had a .177 Model 48 and a .177 Model 75 for over fifteen years and they are my long airguns of comparison.

During initial zeroing of my Model 460, a red squirrel happened across my backyard range some 25 yards away. One shot, one red squirrel, Dead Right There.

My Model 460 seems more powerful than my Model 48, but it has a good trigger (slight creep in 2nd stage), very moderate recoil pulse, and my 13 meter groups with it are slightly smaller than those I shoot with the Model 48.

I will post its chronoed energy next week and I will try to include some pellets of 15.5 grains such as you are using in your Model 250.

For accuracy and overall general use- I think the 460 is likely to be the "better" gun. Maybe not as powerful as the 350- but power isn't everything.

The 350 has also gotten known as a "scope killer" due to its rather harsh recoil.

If I owned neither and was going to pick one of the two to purchase- I'd go with the 460.

I've been shooting a 46 Stutzen, and must say I was pleasantly surprised. It was a 4.5 though, and it was owned by a brother in law of my buddy who had it for tuning. Mr. Green

Thanks AirGunEric,broommaster2000 & Old Pa

AirGunEric : ..> my 350 has a very moderate recoil ..i use bushnell scope and still accurate at 50 yards after 1000 shots.i changed many 350 and sold at a loss to find better. i almost hit foxes around 50 yards. few airguns give me enough confidence to shoot them!..460 feels much better and has a perfect touch comparing 350...but can i still shoot fox in 50 yards?does it penetrate scull?...

Old Pa : ....> i realy become thankfull if u send me a chornograph of 460...i use gamo pro magnum(penetration) pellets (15,43gr) if u can test . i think u can expand ur shooting to 50 yards for small-size games.

thanks all.

Cissp22, May I ask what you do with the foxes after you shoot them?

Procedure: .22 RWS Model 460 was chronographed with 14.3 grain Crosman Premier Hunting, 14.5 grain (14.4 grain actual) RWS Superdome, 18.4 grain Beeman Crow-Magnum, and 21.2 grain Beeman Kodiak pellets. .177 RWS Model 48 (15 years old) was chronographed with 8.2 grain RWS Super-Point and 9.5 grain (9.3 grain actual) RWS Super-Mag pellets.

Both airguns were initially fired five times in succession and then loaded and fired alternately shot by shot for five of each .22 pellets and ten of each .177 pellets. The cocked delay between shots for each airgun was to simulate more accurately hunting conditions.

Please see my earlier post above for additional details on the two test airguns.

Chronographing was done with a second model Chrony chronograph with front screen place approximately one foot off muzzle. Velocities were approximately averages for 18 inches off of muzzle. Non-recorded shots were immediately refired. Results were manually recorded and data was statistically assessed with a TI-36S Solar calculator for mean velocity and standard deviation of shots. An on-line pellet energy calculator was used to assess energy for each average velocity.

Atmospheric conditions at time of testing were 72F and 29.87 inches of pressure.

Results:

.22 RWS Model 460
Crosman Premier Hunting 831.4FPS SD=1.95 21.94 ft lbs.
RWS Superdome 831.0FPS SD=1.22 22.07 ft lbs
Beeman Crow-Magnum 688.2FPS SD=1.30 19.33 ft lbs
Beeman Kodiak 631.2FPS SD=4.15 18.75 ft lbs

.177 RWS Model 48
RWS Superpoint 961.6FPS SD=5.66 16.83 ft lbs
RWS Super-Mag 885.4FPS SD=8.25 16.18 ft lbs

Discussion:

It is my belief that the higher standard deviations between the RWS 48 and the RWS 460 are a result of the additional age and wear on the Model 48. Despite the greater SD, the Model 48 still continues to shoot well for me, although not quite as accurately as the new refurbished 460.

Pellet choice for hunting and pest control is a compromise; light pellets may shoot faster with less parabolic trajectories, but heavy pellets retain energy and penetration at range with their greater ballistic coefficients and sectional densities. I have some question if the Beeman Crow-Magnum at @690FPS muzzle velocity from the Model 460 is going to retain sufficient velocity to expand effectively much beyond 25 yards. Threshhold velocity for this pellet to expand properly has been quoted elsewhere at 600FPS.

My Leupold Compact Lightweight Vari-X II 3-9x40mm EFR scope in the RWS mount does not have sufficient elevation range for me to place the Beeman Kodiak pellets on point of impact at 25 yards. For raccoons in to confines of my suburban backyard, however, this pellet is the clear ticket.

My best choice for the Model 460 for pest control and hunting appears to me to be a domed pellet in the 14.5 grain range. My Model 460 really likes the RWS Super-Dome.

I was very much interested by the results of this informal test and hope these results are of interest and use to other shooters.

Oh, ok. I'm glad they were killed for a good reason then. Pamela Anderson will be thrilled, I'm sure.

Roger- step back and think- "Am I the best person to be judging hunting ethics publicly?"

I do most of my shooting with firearms. I use airguns for indoors practice at home and for controlling destructive pests like red squirrels and crows in my suburban backyard. For these purposes, and based upon the consensus of on-line reviews of the Model 460 and the Model 350, I decided that the 460 better suited my needs. It provides an over 30% increase in muzzle energy over my old .177 48 and transmits it better to the 25-20 yard terminal target with a .22 pellet.

I did not have a Model 350 to test, nor have I shot one. From my experience with RWS springers, I would expect the 350 to be reasonably accurate within the context of its recoil pulse from its mechanism's added energy. I am concerned about some reports of the 350's effect on scopes, as a scope would be necessary for me to realize its additional effective range. Other than that, I am not qualified to comment on the 350 at this time.

Well, I'm not gonna' be on PETA's christmas mailer, that's for sure. But killing an animal just for the tip of it's tail is so wasteful. I'd of actually felt better about it if he said he did it just because they presented themselves when he was in the field. At least he would'nt be hunting them down for such a superfluous reason.

But before the "thread jacked" emoticons start appearing, I'll shut up.

well ...let me explain this matter IMO ....

hunting in the most optimistic view is to suppose someone is starving ....even in this situation killing an animal to eat equals to be a wild animal like coyote ...so better to eat vegetables..

we want to feel better when killing a creature(moral) we use the words pest control or so .. are u sure God has sellected u as a killer of that pest ?? cant u sell ur Gun and make it as a bonus for municipality to do it?

i just told my real need...every one has its own reason for hunting ....i feel terrible when i see people that want to exonerate themselves so use the word PEST for Squirrels!!! ..(animals are more advanced creatures than vegetables.how is it reasonable killing an animal to survive vegitables!!)

when i want to calm down after a deadly shot i never say it was PEST !..i say to myself ..well it might have been killed with many possible accidents and pass away ...
well every one has its own oppinion about hunting...it was my point of view .i hunt but i dont like it at all ....i realy appriciate others poit of view .

I use the term PESTS for the destructive rodents and birds that I KILL and do not EAT.

The increase of the 460 in energy at muzzle and at target is over my old .177 Model 48. I edited my earlier post to make that clear. The Model 350 has higher energy than the Model 460.
