I’ve had a QB78 for over a year now and it has never been the most accurate airgun of mine, in the past I have re-crowned it two or three times shortened the barrel twice, all to no avail.
So this week I decided to have another go, I took the barrel out chopped one inch off it and did a re-crown, and straight away I got an improvement with 10mm groups at 20m, this was using a red dot sight on a bench rest.
As a matter of interest I cut the piece of scrap barrel in half and this is what I found, the barrel has score rings all down the barrel and a deep cut every 1/8” along the barrel, to be honest this barrel is a piece of sh#t so I am on the lookout for a new one.

Wow- that is a piece of sh!t!
Has anybody suggested recently that any Chinese-manufactured airguns aren't "project" guns? If they have- send them to the back of the line. |

I've just ordered a new barrel from Archer Airguns $150.00 in the UK, $29.00 from Archer, I also ordered the bottom Co2 tube with a de-gasser key $40.00 in the UK.
The total cost from the USA including shipping is $82.38, if bought in the UK it would be $190.00, great saving.
The stupid thing is that according to the British Goverment the bottom Co2 tube is a pressure vessel and can only be sold face to face and the person selling must be a FAC holder, but for the same item can be imported with no restrictions whatever.
So well see how long they takes to get here.
Al
PS: Your right Eric they are project guns, if you didn't buy it as one it would be rubbish, but thats where the fun starts. |

Oh, sweet sweet feeling of newing it all along!
People should do that with all cheap guns, but even though cheap guns are cheap, they cost money. For 5 or 6 cheap guns one could own a real gun.
From my experience most guns can use a project. (looks at his Slavia, Airmagnum, Crosman 22XX, especially the last one.) |

Buying a real gun is nice but you need something to take apart and fiddle with, and as for your Crossman 22XX I perfer the "pile of Crosman". |

Most fun, and pain, is in screwing around with the gun.For the SSP I'm gonna get a nice 35 centimeter .177 barrel for pistol practicing. |

My barrel as arrived from Archer Airguns, not bad service ordered on the 12th Aug but not sent until the 16th as they were waiting for another part I had ordered, arrived at my house on the 27th Aug, every thing nicely packed, no Customs duty or tax.
The barrel seems alright but just to be sure I've chopped 1" off the front and recrowned it, after just a quick try out it was doing 6mm groups at 20m, then a spring broke in the trigger unit so thats it for tonight.
All in all very good service from Archer

Hi J
It appears to shoot well with good groups, in fact I was shooting bluebottle flies of the target at 20 m using a 3-9X40 scope, there was a problem at first with pellets going all over the place with a silencer fitted, but then it accrued to me that on some of these Chinese rifles the hole down the barrel is not necessarily in the middle, and sure enough it wasn’t, so removed the silencer and things improved.
One problem that I haven’t sorted out yet is that every four or five pellets it puts out a flier, and I don’t think it’s the pellets or the barrel, so when I get the trigger sorted out I’ll have another go at it, It could be me?
Al
PS: BTW J the grouping should have read 10mm not 6mm groups, I think that was a bit of wishfull thinking. |

Thought I'd cut the front bit off the new barrel in two and compare it to the old barrel, It's a better barrel but only just.
I am still having problems with this QB I’ve fitted the new barrel which is a better one than the original but not really what you would call good.
When shooting at a 20m target I can get four or five shots in a 10mm group then I get maybe one or two fliers, then its back to good groups for a few shots more. I am using a bench rest and the scope off my TX and a range of pellets, it seem to like AA fields and Bisley practice, and the action is well seated down in the stock, I have tried it with and without a barrel band makes no difference.
So for now I’m at a loss as to what the problem is, I’m rapidly going off QBs, I’ve a good mind to throw it into a corner and lable it “Pile O’ QB” ( A derogatory term coined by Anton) but is suitable in this case.
I think I’ll go up to the pub tonight, I’m really pi$$ed off.
