I'd like to increase the power in my 392 a little. Nothing too major, but what I'd like is to get around 600 fps using 21.1g Kodiaks. Right now, they
chrony at around 540.
There's a lot of expert advice in this forum, so I'm sure I'll get
some great suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Stronger linkage is a good idea, then some good seals for the additional pressure ought to put you there. Mac1 {link} is the 'place' for the American pump rigs. |

These won't get you more power, but they make things more comfortable:
1. All the guns that I use with any frequency have trigger shoes. This doesn't change the force required to discharge the gun, but it spreads it out over more nerve endings in the trigger finger. The trigger feels lighter.
2. Are you using optics? I don't know if the 392 has a grooved receiver or not, but there are intermounts (barrel clamps) available.
3. Rest the butt of the gun in the hollow opposite your elbow (the "elbow pit" as my niece says). That first joint next to your trigger fingertip should be even with the trigger. Then come up with a way to make the stock longer or shorter so it fits.
Are there a lot of airgunners on Guam? What kind of regulations do you have? What kinds of pests are there? Can you shoot when it snows? |

My thanks to you both for your replies.
Yes 23, I've been to the Mac1 site and have been seriously considering it. I've thought about just buying a new rifle from them with the steroid tune already done on it and keeping my old rifle as is.
And thanks for the suggestions, Slavia. Yes, there a quite a number of airgunners on Guam, mainly because the firearm regs are pretty stringent. It's not hard (qualifying wise, that is) to get a gun permit, anyone can get one as long as you're not a felon, but it's pretty much a paperwork drill that no one wants to deal with. We have deer here, small Asian type. They are smaller than Whitetail, and they are mostly black, but they make a really yummy feast. Most folks here hunt them with shotgun slugs although there is no rule about hunting them with airgun if you have at least a .30 cal. And there is a season for it.
Mostly, I use my guns to hunt snakes. Yes, I know it sounds odd, but the brown tree snakes here can be kind of a problem at times. Not poisonous but a real pest. An air rifle or pistol is perfect for taking them out of the trees. Most shots are between 5 and 10 yards. Easy pickins if you can spot them. They hide well. heh heh. The biggest one I've personally taken was 7'10" although I've heard of bigger ones being shot.
The Benjamin doesn't have scope rails and I don't like the barrel clamps that are available for it. You need a scope with a long eye relief. So, I JB welded a weaver rail to the top of the receiver, then mounted a Red Dot. It works really well. I posted pics here once of it. You'll find it here:
http://airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=947
Lastly, I don't use CO2. Not because I don't really like it, but when it gets cold here, like below 85f, it losses it's punch. har har har. No snow. I am orginally from Kansas and I've had enough snow to last a lifetime. Life here is good.
Thanks again,
Cliff |

I noticed something today that I can't believe I never noticed before.
Like I said, mostly I shoot snakes. For that I pump the Benji 5 times, which
is plenty.
But today, I was running some Kodiaks thru the Chrony and noticed that when I pumped the Benji 8 times, it didn't dump all the air.
I got a first shot, average, of 539 fps with the 21.1g Kodiaks. A second shot, with no pumping at all, gave me an average of 327fps.
My question is, is there a way to make the rifle dump ALL the air into the first shot, thereby giving me more power?
I've heard I can make the hole bigger, or make the valve spring weaker, thereby letting it stay open longer. Is either of these options viable?
Thanks for your expert advice.

Yes, I'm doing what I don't normally condone, bringing this thread back up to the top, but I'd really like some input from you pros on my last question.
There must be some thoughts on this, and I appreciate your advice.
Thanks,

I would have thought increasing the size of the transfer port would allow more air through, but if you do go down this path increase it bit by bit and crony it each time, but don't go mad.

I have a 1981 Sheridan .20 cal pumper.Before I did anything I contacted Tim at Mac1.Following his advise I have a semi steroid Sheridan.
I added a little length to the pump rod and made sure it was just about to bottom out in the pump tube, this will give you a little more volume of air going into the valve.
After you have done this the next step is to either get a stronger hammer spring or shim the one you have.I opted for a new heaver spring after using shims with a just a little better performance. The stronger spring will allow your valve to dump all the air in your reservoir. It will allow a harder hit on the valve stem and also give a little more time to be open.
I hope this helps you, sorry I did not respond sooner but its summer in Michigan , I spend my time out side most of my days and have not been on the computer as much as when we are ice locked in the house.

Thanks much, to both Alstone and Bob for the
responses. I think I'll try the spring remedy first. It seems a lot safer.
If I stick a shim in there, I can always take it out. Once I drill a hole,
it's forever, right?
In any case, thanks again. I'll let ya'all know how it turns out.
