Okay... after growing up being told "never shoot at hard targets"...
I finely decided to try it with my Pellet gun...
It was fun! Most of the pellets would flatten right out and drop right in front of the targets.
But... here my dilemma...
How do you keep the pellets from sticking to the steel?
What can I coat it with? They are already zinc plated...
It took a pocket knife to scrape some of them off.
This is what my wooden target backings would look like after a weekend of family shooting...
Mind you I will keep the wooden backing @ the 10 yard position for the BB pistol...
At the 15 & 20 yard... I am replacing with steel for my rifle.
This was the 20 yard... still sighting in the Red Dot after working on the 1077... |

| Try cooking spray ("Pam") or spray silicone. But do it over the target dot or the adhesive won't stick, either. |

The only problem is that I would have to degrease it every time I change the targets.
I think I will just use several layers of cheap spray paint... I have safety orange... |

| I'd still be wary of ricochets coming back at you. I was speaking with a local [retired] Fish&Game officer (or "Conservation Officer" as they are known around here) and he was telling about their training using metal targets with handguns many years back. Everything was A-Ok for years, then one day, someone takes a shot- they hear the clank of it hitting the target some 100ft away, then they hear it zing back past them and end up with a .38 cal in another officer's forearm. |

I hear you Eric, and yes it's a risk...
Here is the funny thing... I get ricochets when using the wood backings...
Today I reset the targets at 10 with Wood, 15 & 25 Yards in steel...
I got absolutely no ricochets from the steel targets with pellets yet I get them in the wood... in fact... I got one in the leg from the BB gun off the wood backing... Glad I had jeans on...
Here is some reminats of the pellets.
Here's what they look like when stuck to the steel...

| Why don't you just get a "Super Popper" from After Hours Targets? That will solve all your problems and they last forever! |

Super Poppers are priced at $60.00 plus shipping... I would need at least 8 of them. Not in the budget...
I will be heading over to my old shop today to pick up the rest of the steel I need to finish the range today. "Free"...
My range on the back side of my property is multi pourpose...
I not only shoot traditional distance target grouping...
I am doing "tactical" shooting as well... Multiple targets, quick draw & shooting on the move...
I used to do this kind of shooting at a range just outside of Sacramento with a 9mm and a 357 in my early 20's... It got very expensive so I sold my guns and took a 16 year break. My boys are older and now I can share what I know + some of the stuff that I am learning now...
Just got to go low budget...
*** if any of you have that link to the ARMY training videos... I can't find it again... *** |
