Are you talking about an air-powered shotgun?
If not, why bother- use a .410 off-the-shelf shotgun. |

If you expect it to quieter, you would be disappointed, to develop similar power to a .410 or even close an air shotgun will be LOUD.... I plan to build one this winter, and with 1/2 oz. of shot at 950 fps that works out to 450 FPE.... While that will be my goal, I will be surprised to achieve it....

quieter isnt to much a issue, over power is, if for some reason someone does call cops air would be more forgivable than gunpowder, and probably less destructive if any out buildings got accidently sprayed, i once found a .50 cal benjamin pump up on a vetranarian supply websight, it was intended to be a tranq gun, i wonder if that would make a good base rifle to build a shottie, gotta find it again |

Crosman 1100 air shotgun. I remember an article in Field and Streams in the 1970's where a guy used it to take down ducks. Recalling that story, it was about a hunter who always was lucky to get his ducks in season. His trick was to lure the ducks down to his blind using smaller than normal size duck decoys. Ducks would come low enough for him to shoot them in the head with his Crosman 1100.

Well I'll be.... Benji CO2 and Pumpers converted to shoot .50 cal darts.... You would want to contact the company and find out how heavy the darts are and the velocity so you can figure out the FPE.... It may be that the shot would be going so slow as to bounce off your prey....

dobiman id love to get my hands on a crosman 1100 dont hardly ever see one and when i do im usually a day late and a few dollars short,
rsterne thats my concern i wouldnt need 400+ fpe, just enough to hunt quail and rabbit and maybe some pest control out to about 25 yards or so, but i do also know when it comes to shotguns more is usually better,
and i know some are working miracles on valves for co2 and pumpers
just dont know if anyone can work the valve on one of these tranq guns to handle whatever the load weight of the shot would be |

The problem with shotguns is that you need a LOT of FPE because it's spread out equally over all the pellets.... As an example, the .410 I'm working on has about 180 pellets of #7.5 shot in a 1/2 oz. load.... With 450 FPE spread out over 180 pellets, that's only 2.5 FPE per pellet at the muzzle, and they only have a Ballistics Coefficient of 0.013, so by the time they get to 25 yards each one is down to 1.55 FPE.... If you get 5 hits, that's less than 8 FPE total energy, which isn't very much.... Drop the muzzle velocity to 750 fps, and you're down to less than 1 FPE each at 25 yards, and under 5 FPE total for 5 hits....
