What color/finish are you putting on it?

Going with a leaf green stain, with about 5 coats of satin spar poly. I don't know how deep the green will be yet. I'll decide that with how many coats I go with I guess. I don't know what that woodgrain plastic coating is that they use on those stocks is, but it's a royal pain in the a$$ to get off. Orange Oil based finish remover doesn't budge it, and I can't risk using the chemical stuff around my fiancee. She has COPD. It's got a pretty grain though. It's a hardwood of some kind, I just don't know enough about woods to be able to tell what.

i just got done redoing a Diana 34 stock. I used a chemical stripper but you cant use that. but I agree on wtf did they use on those stocks. I used almond pecan minwax stain and sealer. let that dry for 2 days. rubbed it down with 00 steel wool and sprayed 4 coats clear gloss laquer on it, let that dry 24 hours , wet sanded it with 600 grit , then 2 more clear coats. now I might get my rubbing compound out and give it a dee gloss that makes it look like its a long way to the grain. keep us abreast of your endeavors . oh try wet sanding it with 400 grit, it wont clog up near as bad and it will cut a lot faster. when done wipe it down good and let the sun dry it up for a day

Looks like beech to me. Same kind of wood on my HW50 and HW35.

Probably Asian Beech, A.K.A. "Chinese Mystery Wood." The wood on my Titan turned out horribly blotchy, and ugly grey streaks turned greenish with stain. (I wound up painting it.) I sincerely hope your chunk of wood turns out like I had wished mine would.
