Before I start, I'm going to go ahead and get this out the way. Yes, I know putting a RDS on such a cheap rifle isn't going to make a big difference. But, hear me out. I'm bringing this air rifle from the era of bellbottoms, to the modern age (well, as close as I can)
I'm putting new paint, seals, and stock on it. Figured what better way to make this overkill, than adding a sight? (Am I right though?) Now, what I don't want: a 100$ RDS, on a 20$ rifle. I'm thinking around the 20-40$ range
I seem to remember, some cheap crosman RDSs from when I used to paintball in the mid to late 90s.
Open to suggestions! I will post pictures of completed project!

I don't think it's a dumb idea at all. A RDS might not make it more accurate, but it will make it easier to use. I agree with your logic about not putting a $100 sight on a $20 gun, but there are options in your stated price range.
I have never had much luck with the $10 scopes, like this one:
They often have plastic lenses, and aren't very clear. The adjusting screws are metal in plastic holes, which strips out before you can even get the thing zeroed.
At about $30 you start seeing better options, like this one (and there are others):
