To continue further with what I was saying in the other post there simply isn't any hyper velocity ammo that will be accurate.

The trouble is that a pellet has a very low ballistic coefficient and it's speed will fall into the area known as transsonic within a few feet of the muzzle. In the transonic it will get beaten (literally) by shock waves from different areas of the pellet passing back and forth thru the sound barrier.

In short if you want long range accuracy find a pellet that performs well in your particular gun (every gun is unique) that is at or below 800 fps.

A further note on this is a phantom will only push even the lightest pellets into but not thru the transonic range.

You may find this thread interesting as well:

The "hyper velocity" pellets are also potentially bad for your piston, seal and spring. For best accuracy/power balance try to keep your pellet at around 900 fps or below. This will probably be where a .177 phantom spits a 8-9 gr pellet anyhow, since the 1000 fps rating likely applies to a 7.x gr pellet on a good day. But I'm just guessing . Shocked

30 yards is certainly within your gun's performance envelope, but SMP and Dukemeister are right. Stay subsonic.

At those speeds doesn't the back end of the pellet also create a vacuum? Which along with what's already been said is another accuracy destroyer.

Even if you're shooting a pellet at or just under 1000 fps and it's accurate, it slows down much faster than the same pellet doing 800-900 fps (ideal speeds) which means it will be much more affected by wind and will probably be moving slower at 50 yards than the same pellet doing 800-900 fps.

Speed is overrated, foot pounds of energy is what you want. If you have a gun that will launch a 14.3 grain pellet at 1100 fps then sure you've got a power slut on your hands, but the best performance will come from a pellet heavy enough to bring the speeds down 200+ fps. Sure it's moving way slower but will also carry it's velocity further and be more wind resistant

At these power levels, accuracy is king.
A bird will not know the difference if hit in a kill zone with a 600 FPS pellet or a 900 FPS pellet.
It will know it if his back is just grazed by a 900 FPS pellet.

Accuracy is King.

OK, I'm really holding a Smith & Wesson 629 44 Magnum.
It just felt like an airpistol at the time.

Accuracy is KING

Is that a bear sneaking up on you around the corner of the shack, or are your hunting companions just particularly scruffy?

No bears here since the 11th century... Neutral

Oh, by the way: There is a guy who does shoot Supersonic with pellets, from a Shinsun Career 300 and he gets pretty decent groups out of it. I'm gonna see the guy on Saturday and see how decent they get at 50 yards.

I likey shooting Preds at 900fps.... Accurate and effective ground squirrel kills even at 100 yards. Nice "Wack/thump" with body shots....

I like my .22s at 750-800 fps. Knocks em right out of the trees. Fun to make a pop can dance too. Twisted Evil Oh, BTW, those new pellet boxes that wal mart sells will NOT stand up to the titan .22. I found out the hard way.

I'd like to hear more about that.

My FWB 124 drops small critters very well with well placed shots.
The key term is "well placed".... Accuracy is King.

My short fling with the ultra light speed pellets has been very unpromising.
If there is a secret (other than a gun far out of a disabled vet's budget) to get good accuracy with them, I'm all ears.

Also...Apology to the group about the Bear picture... I must have had a snoot full when I posted it. Embarassed

No apologies needed for me. I used to carry a .41 mag when I hunted in Tennessee. Nothing wrong with that here. I think if I still lived there I would carry one on my hip even if I was hunting squirrel with my airgun.
