Perhaps Stevie and leadman are the best guys to answer this question- and I'm sure they can describe in much better detail what to look for specifically when disassembling the 2240.

Here is a diagram:

Part Number 782-024 is the hammer spring. Putting a stronger spring in its place would allow the hammer to open the valve longer- allowing more gas flow. Unfortunately, the power increase (if any) is unpredicatable with the stock barrel length- this mod works alot more effectively if a longer barrel is installed at the same time. With the stock-length barrel, output may go up some- but alot of Co2 may get waste as well by not having enough "time" in the relatively short barrel to expand fully. Thus the reason why there are so many 2240s out there with longer barrels.

I don't have a 2240 (or a 1377- same basic design but in .177 caliber) around here to look over and point out issues- but I've got an inquiry in with someone trying to sell a "parts" gun that might be an interesting project.

One more thing you may want to consider is sanding down any rough edges where the sear and trigger parts may be getting caught up, not allowing for a very smooth trigger pull.

i usually do all the above mods to my 22xx's but dont have a chrony but i can assure they are all hard hitters

if you want a couple simple mods to increase fps

24" barrel
steel breech
use a 2289 hammer spring instead of the 2240/50/60 spring and you will see a sudden increase in power

how much are the upgrades usually?

I got a good chance to really test it out on the weekend in a gravel pit with many targets. I was impressed with the accuracy, but after some it felt a little weak

Ok so when I took apart my 2240 this morning I noticed that the valve was shifting in the tube. Its a pretty loose fit in there and has some wiggle room. It was moving enough that the co2 exit hole was moving off center towards the front of the barrel and partly choked off by the rubber seal when the gun is uncocked. Is that a usual thing? I used a piece of plastic to wedge the screw against the tube so it wouldnt move but now the exit hole is always choked off just a bit. Probably not a good thing but I'd rather have it solid and choking than sliding and choking and wearing the tube down. Might just use this as an excuse to upgrade to a better tube there.

I don't have a 2240- so I can't compare myself- but if yours is "typical Crosman" it may very well have some QC issues. Can you tell if the valve seats more firmly once the gun is completely closed? A number of Crosman guns have this sort of issue- but the valves' mounting tightens up once the two halves of the receiver are put together.
