Hello,

I recently became interested in air guns after learning how important they were in the Louis and Clark expedition.

I used to own a Red Rider BB gun years ago. I remember how much fun I had with it and I thought I'd learn some more on the subject.

Thanks

What a cool way to get interested!
You'll find this is addicting and there is never ending things to learn and do.
I like mechanical things, and airguns are just about a pure form of this. Either spring-loaded or pumped up with air, they are pretty much a piece of precision, muscle-powered technology that has been under development for centuries and still is.

Welcome! There are some of the best, most experienced minds in airgunning here and it's fairly laid back.

Howdy to you.

Welcome to the forum. As radar said there is some serious experience and brain power rattling around in these cyber halls.

I agree with Rob your reason for getting into airguns is seriously cool

Welcome. And I agree it's a cool way to get interested . Most people don't know that Lewis and Clark had a high powered air gun on the expedition.

Note in this (and it's a great short piece) that even as the guy goes on about this amazing gun, he still says at first "it's only an air gun".

Anyway, welcome.

Ya. And I have "only" an airgun that will punch .45 size holes in a concrete block. Laughing

Yeah, I know. The guy says that and then goes on to point out that the air rifle probably saved the expedition. That it held 20, forty caliber balls and would shoot 40 rounds without loss of muzzle velocity. That these rifles had been used as military ordnance in Europe and would blow a hole through an inch of wood....it was "only an air gun". It was a repeating rifle in 1803.

Oh well. As I've noted before, as long as "they" say "only an airgun", then "they'll" be less likely to pass laws restricting them.

Not only that, but I have read speculation that it altered the course of history as well. Had any group attacked and defeated the Corps of Discovery, that group would have had the largest cache of "modern" arms west of the Mississippi. The speculation is that demonstrations of the air rifle (and the supposition that there were more than just the one) may have prevented such an attack.

Welcome to the forum.

That's something else the guy in the video goes into. It could have made any group of native Americans who got it the best armed in the west for 50 years.
