| We live in a subdivision with standard size lots. A person a few doors down insists on depositing food scraps in their compost pile. As a result, we get "night creatures" (skunks, opossums, raccoons) in our yard. Access to the food supply is gained via a pathway across the back of my yard. I love animals and quit hunting because I don't need them for food and could no longer kill them. However, I have a dog and she has had more than one late night encounter with a visitor. Luckily she has not been bitten but she has been sprayed twice in the face by a skunk. I do not want her hurt or getting rabies. I will kill for her. So what do I need in terms of gun and ammo? Range is probably 20-30 yards. Minimal carry as the neighbor's house is 10-20 yards beyond range. No noise. Thanks. |

| What is your funding criteria? You can build co2 rifles that would deliver the goods starting from a Crosman rifle or buy a ready built Korean or Philipine PCP as well as a few other options including springers. What did you have in mind? |

Raccoons and skunks aren't that hard to kill with a .22 putting out enough power (i.e. 14fpe or so) using good hollow point pellets.
Noise level, however, gets to be an issue. I think J. has the right idea with using a PCP gun- many are made with built-in suppressors (some good, some not)- but the cheapest PCP gun out there, with a pump- is the Benjamin Discovery at $399.00 directly from Crosman:
http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1395
http://www.airguns.com/portal/ProdList.nsf/ProductDetail?OpenForm&itemnumber=BP9M22PSL
But it has no suppressor built-in.
Silencers/suppressors that you add on fall under the same laws as silencers on a standard firearm- i.e. totally illegal if one doesn't have a BATF permit for it.
-And, if anyone says "use a rimfire" one more time without reading the complete question, I think I'm going to snap. This is an AIRGUN forum- not a "I'm too young to own a firearm, so I play with airguns and consider them toys and really yearn for a 'real' gun" forum. |

i only said that because hunting raccons is a big sport in the south...he should understand that a raccon is no easy quary.. opposums are much easier to kill
would you suggest that i tell him something that could wound the animal instead of killing it? |
