When I bought the TX new last December I put about 200 pellets through it, by then it had settled down a bit, so I decided to strip it down check everything was fitted properly. I removed all the factory lube from the gun and cleaned it thoroughly; I think the subject of lubricating a Springer is shrouded in mystical formulas, so coming from Lincolnshire I used what a lot of air gunners around here use, the same grease as used on their tractors, BP Universal Grease on the spring, and the rear piston bearing, I used Molykote DX on the front bearing, and for the rest of the gun 20/50 motor oil.
After 10,000 pellets through the TX it would be interesting to see what wear if any there was. The piston and compression tube showed no wear at all, the outer surface of the spring coils showed just a slight polish which was pretty even over the whole length of the spring, which is what you would expect, the inside of the main body had a slight polish where the rear piston bearing slid up and down but most of the original blue was still there. The rear spring guide had a slight polish but that’s about all. I didn’t bother with the trigger as stripped and polished it when I bought the TX and it was still very smooth and crisp.
Before I put it back together I removed one of the packing washers from the spring guide to bring the output down a bit and that was it. After putting the TX back together I put a few pellets through it and every thing was working as it should, the output had dropped to 10.5 flb on AA Field 4.52s which was ok as it would creep up a bit when the new lube job had settled in, there was no spring twang although there never has been on this gun, if there was I would have to think about a different grease for the spring, also no dieseling was noticed, and all in all I’m pleased with the re-lube.
Going on the results of this test it should go for 20,000to 30,000pellets before a re-lube is necessary and the gun should be good for 100,000 pellets, what the life of the barrel is I don’t know.
