Just got my new issue of the International Hunter Education Association Journal, and there are a few interesting things in there:
There is one article about hunting in areas where there might be cultivated marijuana patches. The author is a California park ranger, but the issue is not limited to California. He stated that every patch he raided had some sort of booby trap - friendly stuff like fishhooks hung at eye level, or shotgun shell/mousetrap mines. He suggests that any time you're in the woods and see an unusual concentration of trash, or PVC pipes, or unusually developed trails - turn around and leave. (Brennan, Gary F., "Be Careful Where You Hunt," Spring 2011, V. 11, No. 1, IHEA Journal, pp. 10-11.)
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has a short video on range etiquette. It doesn't all apply to airguns, but would be useful if you're sharing a range with burners. (Sapir, Glenn, "A Video On Range Safety And Etiquette," spring 2011, V. 11, No. 1, IHEA Journal, pp 12-13.) The video can be viewed at:
http://www.nssf.org/Safety/
The IHEA Journal is slanted towards instructors, but it has lots of good stuff. You can see back issues at:

And, finally, you can now get pink ammunition to go with your pink gun:

Nice. Forget the legal/moral issue of growing dope- but setting booby traps accomplishes what purpose? If you're growing an illegal crop, presumably you are not advertising the fact and its location to people- thus anyone who might find it is likely to have done so by accident- not intent. Being a poor guy hunting deer or taking a walk in the woods is somehow justification to lose an eye by accidentally stumbling across someone's illegal crop? Forget the morality of it- but how does it make sense? If an accidental visitor comes across such a crop- they might just go on about their business and pay it no mind- but if they get injured (or even just spot a booby-trap) then they will be far more likely to report the site to law enforcement as a serious safety concern. |

Those devices are not a deterrent, but rather a signal. They alert the growers and keep one in place long enough for them to come and permanently silence you (or run if you are the police). It doesn't make sense to you, or to me, because we don't think that way. |

Slavia,
Thanks for posting the info about the Pot Plots, I never really gave it any thought but it sounds like something that sure could be very detremental to the health and safety of a hunter or hiker so the info is most important for sure.
I guess the old adage about suspecting every stick as possibly being a snake certianly applies here when you come upon something out of the ordinary as this certainly could be harmful! |

There people in this world, that would if they "accidentally" came across a ganga planation, be more than willing to assist the "farmer" to reap his crop. That kinda thing is one of the reasons for the traps.
BTW, most people, even users, dont have a good clues as to what a marijuana tree looks like. But the smell is unmistakable. |

Nope. Lots of crops get busted in huge state parks and other public areas, not to mention farmers/etc. that find grow ops on their land. You'd be surprised. And like mod90 said, it's not like any random Joe off the street could tell you what an actual grown plant looks like so in reality there's not much to worry about besides hiding the containers they're growing in. Like realtors say, location location location. |
