I found my self thinking the other day on the simplest ways to increase power in a springer. I thought about increasing the spring length by stretching & heat treating it. In theory it should work. Jut wondering if anyone ever tried this and if so what were the results.

None of this is a "new" concept- just as a note. Stretching a spring and heat treating it may very well destroy its characteristics and the first time it is compressed it may very well "set" alot shorter than it started.

With most springers the limiting factor to power output is not the amount of spring pushing the piston, but the amount of air displaced by the piston. Many people have tried to wind their own custom springs- with little gain. Even the "big name" airgun spring "experts" have shown minimal gains over a properly-designed factory spring if only the spring is being replaced- their best 'market' is where either factory quality control is low (i.e. factory springs are not great all the time) or a bad design is released to market. These days, either of those occurring are getting lower and lower.

About the only times where a spring change will gain anything of any significance is if the factory spring was defective, designed more for a specific shooting characteristic (i.e. less twang) than it was for power, or was shortened for a specific market (i.e. a "detuned" product for specific markets such as Canada, the UK, etc.).

Trying to "re-tune" an existing spring is not going to get you what you want. Even if you were able to squeeze a small amount of extra power out of the gun and not destroy the spring- the question would then become how much harsher the shooting cycle has ended up.

The best "compromise" out there is a slightly tighter spring and a re-designed spring guide system- i.e. Vortek kits- the power remains the same, and the shooting cycle smooths out.
