Okay... no... not one of my airguns... Well... because I have my two favie airguns apart for spring cleaning and upgrades...
but I got "first kill" with my Rimfire project today... and marks my first kill of the year....
Custom 1972 Ruger 10/22
Whistle piggies are starting to poke their heads up... This one dared to turn his back on me and was diving for his hole.... so I took out his spine @ 75 yards...

According to a quick search of Wikipedia....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog
When alarmed, they use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the colony, hence the name "whistle-pig". |

WhistlePig, is a nickname for a ground squirrel in Southern Idaho. The official name is Townsend Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus townsendii. These ground squirrels communicate by emitting a faint, high-pitched whistle while partially underground, hence the name WhistlePig.
A WhistlePig's habitat is primarily arid desert burrowing in grassland hills and sagebrush. Each adult digs two burrows, a small one in the feeding area, evidently used as an escape hatch if predators approach, and a much bigger home burrow that is at least 50 feet (15 m) long and up to 6 feet (2 m) deep. During the spring-time of the year when the young are abroad and half-grown, they tend to be active, scurrying about between their auxiliary burrows and feeding on green plants. The adults are also known to be carnivorous, eating their young and road kills. One litter is produced per year, with 6 to 10 pups per litter. To a rancher with livestock or horses, the borrows can cause serious injury.
These critters average about the size of a 12 oz beer bottle....
Sportsmen have been encouraged to eradicate them... It's both a challenge and a blast! |

BTW... The PANSAL Air Gun club meets in Sand Hollow, ID for the anual "Spring Break" and shoot. Part of the fun for the guys that have their hunting license is the Whistle Pig hunt...
Most of the local guys are willing to share rifles for "Fly In" guests... It happens early May.
A non-resident non-game license is only $35.00
May-June are the most active time for these critters and we are out just about every weekend if the weather is right...

| My son-in-law bought one of the new Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22's... He loves it but will admit... his old Ruger 10/22 is far more reliable... |

Thanks,
Truth be known... it's not stainless...
The finish was so rough when I got it from the pawn shop for $95 out the door... I stripped everything... Bead Blasted the aluminum parts and Clear GunKoted them...
I polished the barrel and bolt. Replaced the stock with a "New Take Off" and sent the original stock to Sniper for him to do his magic...
The Original stock has soo much grain character that I can't wait to see how it turns out.
I still have a small laundry list of work to do on it..
Bolt mods... (Facing, New firing pin, extractor, Pinned and chamfered)
Jeweling the exposed face of the bolt
Trigger Polished and Tuned to 2.5# pull
Bedding the stock to free float the barrel
Extended Mag release and matching charging handle
The bolt will also sport the Ruger Logo laser etched through the jeweling.
When it's all said and done with the OE stock... the Take off stock will get a fun treatment with the CNC laser etching... Layout below...
Side by side with my son-in-laws 1994 10/22 the day I bought it...
After the initial metal work was done.
Bolt Polishing.
Barrel lathe cut to 16.5" and I did a recessed target crown.
With CCI Mini Mags... I group with less than a 1.5" spread at 100 yards from the bench...
I can't wait for the trigger tune and for it to warm up more, then see if I can't do better....
Take off stock layout....

Gun Kote is one of the few spray bake finishes that meet Mil-Spec standards... It can also be used on plastics... but it becomes a No-bake finish...
Update on the Original Stock...
I just got a text and pic from Sniper... aka Greg the Stripper...
I sent the stock out on Thursday and it arrived today...
He all ready has it stripped down....

No, I'm EdwardFinishands.
stripped, finished sanded and stained
less than 2 hours after arrival.
You're lucky with this one, it wasn't taken care of. except 2 pinholes which you won't notice, all the dings and scratches sanded out.
clear starts tomorrow. |
