Most Moly Greases are only 2-3% Moly.... Paste is 60-70%....

In my opinion- the use of molybdenum lubes/greases in a typical airgun is doing very little. The best possible idea would be to polish metal-to-metal contact areas, apply a small bit of moly powder and burnish it on the steel- not as a grease-supplied component. Moly is only intended to aid in protecting metal (iron/steel) parts where they meet other metal parts and there is movement- ie. on the spring guides and pretty much nowhere else other than perhaps some of the trigger components. In additional to this- any lube- especially a thick, moly-based product, is likely to become filled with crap/residue and help drive the requirement of a teardown of the rifle for re-lubing more frequently. A good high-pressure, high-temp chassis grease applied sparingly, or if moly is a pre-requisite to one's thinking, a spray-on moly-kote type product and a good grease would be the best.
In all honesty- on a typical break-barrel springer, one is more likely to wear out the cocking arm where it contacts the piston (and where a grease-type lube cannot be maintained very easily) than to wear out a trigger or spring guides- i.e. where a lube can be better applied/retained. |

Thank you for explanation! So, wich one you can recomend for use?
I have new Winchester 500 from Daisy, made in Turkey. I did about 500 shots with it and it still squeak while cocking, so I want to disassemble it and lubricate. May be somebody have instruction how to do this?
And where I can get the "real" moly paste? I live in Canada, Montreal area. |

"Real" moly paste can be purchased at a Honda dealer. Last week I picked up a 3 oz.(weight) tube of Honda Moly 60 Paste for US$11.64. This is 60%(by weight) moly and the remainder is petroleum grease.
It is amazingly slippery stuff--it smoothed out the cocking cam on one of my bolt action powder-burners--no other grease or oil has worked so well for me. Most would agree that it is best for high pressure steel-on-steel applications--the barrel pivot point on a bbl. cocking airgun is a perfect example. I will see how it performs in other places. |

Any grease is made up of two things - an oil of some sort, and a carrier or sub-strate, if you will, of some sort.
So moly grease is molybdynum-dysulfide (i assume this to be the carrier) and an oil of some type.
You can make your own grease, but I wouldn't use it for much. Mix fine clay (dig a deep hole in your back yard) and 10wt motor oil.
Believe me, I was truly shocked that this is the substance used to protect and lubricate many, many, critical parts in the world. Basically dirt and oil.
Kinda scary.
I have some silicone grease that is safe for use on disc brakes (extremely high temperature stuff and non-petroleum based so no fires). I don't know if it would work in an airgun or not, but it wouldn't harm the rubber seals, wouldn't diesel, and won't burn up from repeated use.
Just my thoughts....... |
