Crosman Premier .177 Super Points- Tight?

I was out and about the world a couple days ago- so what did I do? Of course I stopped in at the best place I know of to stock up on pellets I can't find easily at the local hardware store or Wally-mart.

$80 worth of pellets later and a couple days to try them all out- I'm wondering if I have a defective batch of Crosman Premier .177 cal Super Points? The head diameter is very wide- as in I really have to shove the pellet in the bore and you can hear the pellet is moving alot slower than with any other type of pellet in the same weight class (8-ish grains).

Do Super Points usually come with excessively large head diameters, or is it possible I have some from a bad batch? (I have 2 cans of them and they are both the same and I think I may find them unusable unless one of my guns has a slightly oversized bore diameter).

I had a bit of time and the micrometer was already out- so I thought I should measure some of these "Superpoints" to see what-was-what.

Odd- but the head diameter is larger than the skirt diameter- which seems to be contrary to every other pellet being sold: AirGunHome Pellet Specs Page

The image doesn't look like the skirt is smaller- but the micrometer isn't lying!

I guess this makes the Superpoint a bit heavier balanced forward, and may affect how the diabolo design/skirt controls airflow around the pellet. Anyone have any idea what the application for these pellets would be- or how Crosman might have intended them to be used?

Anyways- for the sake of reference (these were measurements taken from 20 or so pellets from the same tin):

Crosman Premier .177 Superpoint Pellet:

Head Diameter: .177" to .178"
Skirt Diameter: .169" to .177"
Overall Length: .250"
Head Type: Pointed

Weight? I dunno- but more than 7.9gr I would say.

You'll have to get a pellet re-sizer Eric, it would be a steady job but it would make them usable.

If the Skirt is less than .177 then I would say that you have a faulty batch, because whatever happens the skirt needs to be a good fit in the rifling, not the head. I've never seen a pellet/shell or anything fired from a gun which uses the front of the projectile to get it to spin.

Maybe it's made especially for Groundhogs, you put the pellet in backwards and when you fire it at a Groundhog it think's it's going away, not coming towards it. Crazy LOL

There you go- the "outsmart the groundhog" special.

A pellet re-sizer- anyone sell these (cheap), or is it just a matter of drilling a hole the correct size in a steel plate and pushing the pellets through?

Drill a hole in a steel plate about 1 1/2 times the length of the pellet, the hole size need to be 4.6-4.7mm for the skirt.

But I'm not to sure about your pellets with the head being larger than the skirt. I think I would drill a hole 4.5mm and countersink the entrance to give the pellet a lead in, then pollish the bore out to 4.6mm

I once had some Eley Wasp pellets which I tried to use in an old BSA break barrel and I had to resize them to get then in the breach, but they worked allright.

I would still have a word with Crosman about it.

I will be speaking with Crosman about the issue for sure. I'd also return them, but they are from a retailer that is a 60-mile trip, one way (out of my way of course)- so I may not get to that anytime soon.

Can you load them in the 1077? I haven't tried them in the 1077 yet, but they did group well from a 1377. Maybe the probe flairs the skirt as it engraves the rifling around the head? I'll have to check them a bit more closely to see . . .

I haven't tried them in a 1077- I was worried the fat head might cause one or two problems; the first being that they might dig into the plastic pellet magazine, hollowing it out and not allowing normal-sized pellets to be retained properly- and the second being that if the barrel and the magazine chamber/slot are not lined up perfectly the transfer from one to the other of the pellet might cause jams and silliness (the 1077 barrel at the receiver end is slightly tapered to help direct pellets into it- which is one of a couple reasons why trying to get a 1077 to shoot beyond about 675fps without remaking the whole gun is a bit counterproductive).

Eric,,These are fantastic pellet's, and if you really look at them you can see that alot of thought went into the process. The head may seem a little tight, but if you inspect a spent round you'll see that the skirt is now the same size as the head, with very distinct and crisp rifling on both the head, and skirt. If you check an un-fired pellet you can see the skirt is slightly smaller than the head, but when fired it would be pretty hard to expand both the head and skirt at the same time. Anyway's in conclusion, when fired this pellet is spinning like a football thrown by Joe Nameth,,Perfect Spiral. Whenever I use this pellet though, I have to re-sight my scope just for this pellet, It's POI is so much more different than any other pellet in my arsenal. Hope this help's, Andy.

Andy- this was awhile back now- and those pellets were unusable in all my guns- I used a micrometer to measure them (as you may note above). You could actually hear the difference in velocity traveling through the barrel vs. other pellets of the same weight. And- they were long ago returned. I will have nothing more to do with them- and perhaps not with Crosman pellets period- they jacked their prices on all their pellets for Canadian dealers- so much so that they are likely to end up at least 25% higher in price than they had been earlier in the year.

Really?, That's too bad, I've only experienced problems with this pellet in my Gamo Recon, but that's only because I would have to re-sight my scope, but If I was solely using that pellet for the day, it wasn't that much of an inconveniance. That's news though regarding the Crosman pellet's. I only really use two-three types of Crosman ammo , Remington Point's in .177, and .22 Field Point's primarily, but when I ordered my Phantom from "AGS" it came with 2100 Crosman Dome's, so I don't think I'll be running out for quite a while,LOL, and BTW, Thank's for getting in some "Prometheus" round's, I already got my stock for this summer, but I'll be ordering some from you before the year's out(They're Fantastic in my Daisy 622X). The RWS L/F pellet's that I just got in are one of the best pellet's I have ever fired. I had thought that they were just re-badged Skenco's, but there is actually a difference between the two, The RWS are just a tad smaller maybe a mm, or so, and still the same weight(11gr.). The only thing I'm waiting for now is for Nikkonos to get his stock back up and running, the last time I checked he was completely out of .22 round's which really suck's, I hope he gets his shyte together soon, Laughing , I'm down to my last 4 tins of Spitz-Kugeln's. Cheer's, Andy.

It's always possible I got a completely FUBAR'd batch of those SuperPoints, but I'm not going to throw more money at them to test again.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing them offered in .22,LOL, but I'll tell ya, What I really like about Crosman round's,,Is the way they compact down into themselves, It's something I've never experienced with any other lead pellet, compared to a pure lead pellet like Daisy PM it's the opposite end of the spectrum. I get really good results with their .22 FieldPoint's, especially in my Phantom, and my B9 is deadly accurate with Remington Point's. I just got in some Skenco type 4's (Black Match),,,You gotta try these out, very accurate in all of my .177 gun's(well, except my Recon,LOL, Only top-o-the line lead for that baby Laughing ), Have you tried Crosmans .177 Premier Ultra Mags?,,I was thinking of trying them out, Cheer's, Andy.
