I have access to some farm land where I have permission to shoot, all pest control in the UK is governed by something called the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, under it a general licence is granted allowing an authorised person to shoot BIRDS: (covered by the open general licence's) crows, rooks, jackdaws, magpies, jays, wood pigeon, collared doves, and feral pigeons. MAMMALS: brown rats, grey squirrels, stoats, mink and rabbits.
This licence allows you to shoot the above without having to apply for it, you are deemed to be authorised provided you abide by the rules. Now comes the tricky part I tend to shoot wood pigeon and rats, regarding the pigeons the law states That I have to try all other means of removing the pest before shooting it, this can include putting nets over fruit using bird scares’ and shooting a gun but not at the birds, if all this fails then you may shoot the pest., ( by which time it has cleared off ).
On top of this if I shoot at home targets or pigeons etc I must make sure that the pellet does not leave my land, if it does it’s a £5000.00 fine, so if you shoot a pigeon and with it’s last breath it hops over the fence into my neighbours garden and the pellet is still inside the bird, then I’m in the cart again.
You just can’t win, you guys in north America don’t know how lucky you are.

I'm a member (though I don't post much) of a UK AG forum. I read some of the posts regarding the UK gun laws, and the AG laws and I just have to shake my head and sigh.
Here in the US, we value our 2nd amendment rights to arm ourselves; though it seems that the liberals are slowly but surely eroding those inalienable rights. |

Hey there Al,
Yeah those are some funky laws.It seems like every time one turns around,"at least here that is",new restrictions apply... However the old laws never get revised, and rarely reflect whats going on in the here, and now, which makes some of them border on the absurd. |
