Do we have any members from France? Does anyone know about French airgun laws?
To Louisianans, that's our Mother Country!

"Mother country"! How many countries back you boys going to travel? Aren't most of you now descended from Acadians- not the "French" proper?
There was one person awhile back who registered a couple times but would never "activate" their account. So I provided their email to one of our Canadian French-speaking members (under500fps) to email them and explain what they had to do to complete the process in case they were confused- but he never heard back from them either. So, perhaps it was just a spammer and not a real, live Frenchman. |

Bonjour, mon ami!
Basically, what are the French laws about air guns:
Do you need a permit to own one? If you do, how would you go about getting one? Is it difficult?
Are there restrictions on their power level?
Are they legal for hunting?
Is there organized target competition for airguns in France?
That sort of thing!

Mais non! Me, I'm a transplant from Pennsylvania, so I don't count! But for the local-born: you're confusing the Cajuns with the Creoles.
CAJUNS (Acadians) are the descendants of the French people who the English expelled from Nova Scotia. They migrated to the wilderness area to the southwest of here, though some have moved to New Orleans
CREOLES are the descendants of the French and / or Spanish people whose ancestors came directly from the old country. For the most part, they came direcly to New Orleans.

Thank you Brian,
this is exactly what I should have answered
So to sum up, in France weapons are classified in categories.
Airguns are in the 7, and this category is splitted in 2.
If less than 10 joules you don't need a permit. You just have to be 18 years old (or 16 with parental agreement) and present your ID card.
If more than 10 joules, you need a licence from a shooting range or a hunting licence (here you need a permit to be allowed to hunt)
The hunting licence way is a bit strange as it is totally forbidden to hunt with airguns in France (laws are always weird...)
About target competions, yes there is a championship but I personnaly don't care. If you want to know more you can consult the Fédération francaise de tir website (http://www.fftir.asso.fr/)
And if you want to discuss with french guys about airguns come on the best (and only one) french forum http://airguns.forumactif.com/ |

Only one French forum? That doesn't seem right. Mind-you, as a comparison there is really only one "Canadian" airgun forum as well (there are a couple others- but not what I would really call "Canadian specific" per se). Any idea what the population of France is these days? |

Yes only one about airguns. There are others about hunting or sniping but with firearms.
We are about 60 millions but we don't have a gun culture. Our laws are quite restrictive that is why this passion is not much spread over the population but finally I think it is better like that. |

Thanks, everyone, for the information!
ANOTHER airgun forum?! Yes, like a fool, I joined it. I don't speak French, but I've been wanting to learn!

Hmm- call me strange- but I'm thinking that taking, oh, a French class or tutoring might be a bit more constructive to learn the language, non? |

Mais oui! But you see, I'm as lazy as hell, and need something to motivate me before I make any effort. To take the trouble to learn a foreign language for it's own sake: I won't bother. To do so because I have some person or group I want to communicate with: well, I might!
