Has anyone used J & B compound to clean their air rifle barrels? I am new to air rifles and have read everything from do not clean the barrels to only clean them when accuracy is suffering. I have shot approximately 1200 pellets through this rifle and have never cleaned it.
If the J & B is used how will it effect the seal at the back of the barrel?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated. |

Is it shooting worse then before? Have you checked all other problems that can lead to an accuracy issue?
I never clean my barrels and I put reasonable amounts of pellets trough them.
I think Fritz shoots ominous amounts of pellets with his Diana 34. He might have something to say about it. |

ya i don't know. i cleaned the barrel on my marauder
after easily 3000 rounds and it was VERY clean.
my springers go a year or longer in between cleanings.

The JB will actually remove metal from your barrel. It's liquid sand paper. Don't use it unless you want to chance wasting the barrel.
I've been cutting back. Actually I haven't done any shooting in quite a while and my finger is itching... |

JB is indeed an abrasive. It is a good product for removing copper fouling or residue from moly-coated bullets (deposited under high pressures and temperatures). That's not the case with airguns. In addition, the rifling in airguns is shallower and more delicate than in powder-burners.
The thing is, you don't really need it. An ordinary non-petroleum cleaner/degreaser like Windex or 409 will work just fine. If you use a petroleum solvent like Hoppe's #9, Goo-Gone, or Oops! be sure it doesn't contaminate any synthetic parts (like seals). Also be sure it is completely wiped out/dried out before shooting the gun.
