I know folks are gonna say it don't count because I didn't take a picture. Tuff cookies on them! I got my first rabbit today!!! Things just happened so fast, I forgot!

Well, like most firsts, somethings went well, some did not. It's the ones that didn't I need a bit of help with.

First let me describe set up. I came downstairs to get some ice tea. From kitchen I noticed porch drape was messed up from when I had the window open earlier. I went to fix it, when I see this nice big bunny sitting in the middle of my yard. This don't happen often, I live in the city, and my "yard" is only 25' x 25'.

I quickly went upstairs and grabbed my 2300kt, and my tin of kodiaks and headed to the back 2nd story window. Quietly I took down a box fan I have back there pulling air through my bedroom.

I took sited bugs in, steadied aim, flipped saftey, pulled trigger...BAM! I blew a hole in the track of the vynal window! I forgot to adjust for scope barrel height distance!

Bugs was alarmed now, bud didn't move! Lucky me. Loaded another kodiak, took aim again, this time holding barrel higher. BAM! This time I hit home, bugs jumped 2 feet in the air, landed, ran five feet and flopped over. Only bugs wasn't dead, I was just about to turn away and claim my prize when I noticed that bugs was now doing the irish jig on his side.

I'd only wounded him...(sigh). I tried over then next few minutes to get another hit to end his pain, but the long grass and his constant writhing made this impossible. Eventually he did stop moving. I waited an extra few minutes just to make sure.

At first I couldn't tell where I'd hit him. Actually it wasn't until I had him nearly fully dress and opened up the heart/lung cavity that the pellet fell out. Looking at the meat on the body near this area, I'd hit high and a bit to the left. Either I'd flinched as I pulled the trigger or my scope isn't sigted in as good as I thought. I'll check the scope again over the weekend with some target practice.

Another thing that could have thrown me off was shooting from hieght. Simlar to what deer hunters have to compensate for when shooting from a tree stand. Because I was aiming for the head, between the eye and ear from what I hear is the best shot placement.

Suggestions?

Another area I need to practice is dressing! Once I brought bugs inside to dress, I made a real mess! I used a brand new swiss army knife to do the dressing with. Flipping bugs on his back legs splayed I made a slice, what I thought wasn't too deep so I can peel the pelt off as I've read many times. Only the knife blade was so sharp, I nicked the inner membrane. Not a pretty smell. Honestly, for my first mamal, the dressing bit didn't bother me in the least, only had one gag moment when I flipped the carcass over so the guts could fall into the garbage can. I got a full on wiff of the insides...YUCK! Once I did that, and then used kitchen sheers to remove feet and head. I rinsed bugs down in a cold water, then tossed him in a cassarole dish and then into fridge.

What I really need is a GOOD video on doing this. I've tried Youtube, but most videos don't show all the details, or they're so amaturish they make you sea sick from bouncing around so much. I've got diagrams, as well, but that again doesn't show detail.

Suggestions on this?

Thanks,

Jax

At that distance... don't bother trying to compensate for angle.

Don't shoot your window...

Flip 'em on his back. Slice THE SKIN from sternum to pelvic region. Carefully reach in and scoop out the guts... slice skin around neck and feet if you want to save, then work from the stomach and pull off skin from the rib cage. Around the back, neck, yank out the front legs. One hand, take body, other take skin. Pull sharply to separate the remaining (lower half) carcass from hide.

Whallah! fwesh wabbit!

BTW, don't forget to be berry berry quiet when wunting wabbits. Rolling Eyes

Yeah a good whiff of guts can make you have a personal protein spill for sure,jf your not ready for it..... Puke Laughing
Here is a pretty straight forward approach to dressing. There was another one that I viewed a couple years back but can't find it... Rolling Eyes

Congrats on the first rabbit kill. I know I was excited w/mine. Seems the 2300 (from what I can see is a .177 C02 pistol in the lower 500fps range) is a bit underpowered for rabbits, but apparently you placed it well.

So, if the .177 is rated @ 520fps, what is the .22 rated at...couldn't find one on pyramidair.

You wouldn't find it on pyramid air, the kt's are built by crosman's custom shop. "Stock", I've a 14" long barrel so that might get me up around 600fps, but that's not the important thing. I and the kt likes heavier pellets. Can't beat them kodiak's for knock down power.

It's a custom shop gun.The velocity depends on the barrel length you order.

Jax..I think I'll try shooting some Kodiaks out of mine, and see what happens.. Mr. Green Mine loves Crosman field/hunting the best so far.I don't have any JSB's right now but I bet those in a lighter weight would do well in the KT.

Wow thats a lot of cutting...

one cut throat to a$$...
pull the gut out....{If yer don't like the smell
do it under water...}
cut feet off..{Meat chopper}
push yer hand around the rabbits back between skin
and body.....grab skin and pull the two apart till
the skin is over its head..then chop the head off...

its like all ways...the first time/s are not easy...Pratice...

The warmer the rabbit is the easyer it will be to skin...

Pete

Pete, our methods are very similar, and require nearly the same amount of cutting.

I only make one necessary slice from sternum to the pelvic region. Normally I can easily pull off skin from around the head and feet.

Basically "stock" you have a 2250.... so about 525 fps with 14.3 gr. at 70*F (~9 FPE)....

I had been my intentions to install one of joe's bulk/hpa kits. Unfortunilly I never seem to have then funds at the same time he's got a running production! <sigh> That 14" long barrel makes it more difficult to steady then a normal pistol. Had I been able to install the hpa kit, it'd shoot more like a carbine.

What fpe would Kodiak's give at 21gr?

BTW...that video posted, I just seen that when I went back to youtube again. I like it, need to get me a good cleever though!

Considered a shoulder stock? IIRC they are only like $30.

I'm sure Joe would save you a kit if you ask...
