It depends a lot on the type of powerplant.... Springer, Pumper, CO2, or HPA.... and other factors like barrel length, etc....

In a Springer, many guns are advertised at "1000 fps in .177" and "800 fps in .22".... They usually end up shooting about 800-850 in .177 with a 7.8 gr. pellet ( 11-13 FPE) and 650-700 in .22 with a 14.3 gr. pellet (13-15 FPE)....

The .177 will usually have a flatter trajectory but the .22 will hit harder....

on what bob said... I agree sign

we both have many different types of airguns...

we both have chronographs...

i prefer .22 over .177 but have many of both.

speed ain't everything. Cool

Doesn't it matter what you plan on doing with the gun???

Paper targers or tin cans, the .177 is a great choice.

Hunting grizzy bear or bison, I'd go with the larger caliber.

Dude, you TOTALLY missed a 0! It's 1.000.000 fps, million man! Rolling Eyes

A powerfull rifle often delivers a better punch in .22 in comparison to .177. I'd personally say at least 16 Fpe in .22. It starts getting fun at 20 Fpe in .22 though. Razz

If you are wanting to keep your shooting skills up, while not spending too much money (even .22LR isn't exactly "cheap" for good stuff anymore) then yes, an air rifle can be worth the purchase.

Plinking, hunting, Target shooting discipline? What do you fancy one for?

Iron Sights or scoped?

Have a powerplant in mind? Spring Piston, pneumatic pump, pre-charged pneumatic?

How much do you want to put towards your purchase?

What Brands/models do you have in mind?

How thought out is this for you? It took me several years to conceptulize and finally execute making two carbines out of the Crosman 1377 platform.

Another attribute of the 22 over the 177 is that they are just a little bit easier to fumble around with your fingers. I find that the little extra size makes it easier to load a 22.

On the other hand, 177 is cheaper and easier to get. I find that 22 pellets are cheap enough though. Either size is still a fraction of the cost of 22lr.

.22 for sure. Out of all the air rifles, I'm pretty impressed with the Walther Falcon Hunter. I have it in .25 caliber. When you line up a .177 pellet, .22 pellet and .25 pellet, you'd be amazed at the difference. You'll never want to go back to .177 again. Also, the .22 and .25 is so much easier to load into a break barrel. The .177 is so small and hard to work with. Nothing wrong with .177, it has its place, but if your not new to airguns, go with the .22 or .25. I took 2 quick pics to give you a general idea of the size difference. Sorry for the lousy cell phone pic quality, but you get the idea.
