For anyone who cares.... I ran some CCI .22 CB Shorts over the Chrony today.... They averaged ~700 fps, but the range was pretty wide, plus or minus about 25 fps.... Anyway, the average works out to ~32 FPE at the muzzle.... but the 29 gr. bullet carries energy way better than a pellet.... It has a BC of about 0.139 at those velocities.... so it has about 29 FPE remaining at 50 yards...

If you compare that BC with about 0.050 for a really good pellet.... that means that you would have to kick an EunJin Dome out at about 775 fps or a Kodiak at about 900 fps (37 FPE) to have the same energy left at 50 yards.... It gives you a feel for what kind of power is necessary in a airgun for tough critters like a raccoon.... Shocked

Savage 24.... The velocity was anywhere from 680ish to 730ish.... I guess with just a primer to drive the bullet they aren't very consistent.... I understand the CB Longs are even quieter than the Shorts although it's hard to imagine it.... I was shooting my .177 D-34 this afternoon as well and it's louder than the CB Caps.... Shocked

I thought using CB Caps on 'coons was my suggestion and you just agreed with me.... Faq-U

ummm bob..... pull a bullet.. there is about 1-2 grains of powder in a cb.

the only .22 rf without powder is AGUILA-SUPER COLIBRI-20 grain-12fpe.... they use ELEY primers... Wink ....... Faq-U

WOOHOO i know something bob doesn't!!! Laughing Laughing

That's what I get for quoting internet sources without doing the research myself.... Embarassed

However, I do have some RWS Flobert BB Caps that I do know are primer only.... 17 gr. round ball at ~ 700 fps.... Also, Aguila make a regular Colibri that is only 375 fps (6 FPE).... Razz

Back atcha.... Mr. Green

The lowest powered rimfire round is the .22 BB Cap.... This is a round ball in a very short case (only about half the length of a Short case).... The ball is propelled solely by the primer, there is no powder in the case, and they are almost silent (much quieter than most airguns).... Two companies still produce these loads:

Aguila make the "Colibri", 20 gr. at 375 fps = 6 FPE
RWS make the "Flobert", 17 gr. at 750 fps = 21 FPE

Next on the list is the .22 CB Cap.... Nowdays, these use the classic 29 gr. bullet from the .22 Short or Long (it used to be a "conical ball", hence the name), and either a Short or Long case, but again, only propelled by the primer or a tiny powder charge.... Several companies produce these sub 800 fps (and very quiet) rounds.... Some call them CB Caps, others just call them Shorts:

CCI make three:
The "CB Cap Short", 29 gr. at 727 fps = 34 FPE
The "CB Cap Long", 29 gr. at 727 fps = 34 FPE
The "Target Short", 29 gr. at 780 fps = 39 FPE
Eley make two:
The "Rapid Fire Match" using the Short case, 29 gr. at 750 fps = 36 FPE
The "Z" using the Long case, 29 gr. at 800 fps = 41 FPE
Fiocchi make the "Super Match 200" using the Short case, 29 gr. at 800 fps = 41 FPE
Lapua make the "Rapid Star" using the Short case, 29 gr. at 780 fps = 39 FPE
RWS make the "R25" using the Short case, 28 gr. at 560 fps = 20 FPE
Winchester make two:
The "CB Cap Short", 29 gr. at 700 fps = 32 FPE
The "CB Cap Long", 29 gr. at 770 fps = 38 FPE

Remington have a brand new light load, the "CBee Long Rifle", 33 gr. Hollow Point at 740 fps = 40 FPE

Two companies still produce higher powered .22 Shorts and Longs.... These are supersonic or nearly, and significantly louder:

CCI make three:
The “High Velocity Short”, 29 gr. at 1132 fps = 83 FPE
The “HV Hollow Point Short”, 27 gr. at 1164 fps = 81 FPE
The “High Velocity Long”, 29 gr. at 1180 fps = 90 FPE
Winchester make the “Super-X Short”, 29 gr. at 1095 fps = 77 FPE

I was also able to find the Ballistics Coefficients for most .22 Rimfire bullets:
27 gr. Hollow Point High Velocity = 0.098
29 gr. Solid High Velocity = 0.105
29 gr. Solid Subsonic = 0.122
32 gr. Hollow Point Hypervelocity (eg. Stinger) = 0.116
38 gr. Hollow Point High Velocity = 0.138
40 gr. Solid High Velocity = 0.145
40 gr. Solid Subsonic = 0.169
Note that even the 27 gr. Hollow Point is at least twice as good as the best waisted pellet....

This information is from Sierra's website.... It is really cool, because it breaks the Ballistics Coefficients down by velocity ranges.... under 905 fps.... 905 to 1047 fps.... and over 1047 fps.... You can see how the BC decreases through the transonic and into the supersonic ranges....

http://www.exteriorballistics.com/ebexplained/22rimfire.cfm

Interesting stuff.... especially when you compare the values to waisted pellets (BC 0.009 to 0.050).... Rolling Eyes

bob you're my 2nd favorite canadian. Laughing (neil young is #1)

my cci target shorts are labeled at 830. they go 880 from my marlin. Question

it's funny that these are becoming popular since the .22LR spawned from 'em. i also know-in one of my ballistic books- of an obsolete gallery load that was something like 17 grains @1600fps. it's around here somewhere.

i know of most you've listed. the cool thing about cb's is the wide power range. the floberts look kinda cool. plinkin' with theses out in the sticks are dead silent. i've been shooting cb's the better part of 15 years. Cool

are you familiar with EICHELBERGER wildcats? mostly based on .22LR .25acp. .10-.14 cal... as in 7-10 grains @ 3500fps. Shocked

(reference-cartridges of the world 11th edition)

ooops. i know. not airguns.... but the comparisons are fun....
