| Hey folks im getting my first gun soon and i'v been looking online at a few air rifles and iv got my eye on the Daisy 880 and i'm wondering how many of you own this rifle and what you think of it and also how many FPS with a pointed pellet it takes to drop small game. Thanks and happy Plinkin. |

| what would you recomend for a inexpensive gun thats accurate and a bit more lethal than 15 yards? |

a good spring piston rifle. $100-$200 will get you a decent rifle.
i like .22 over .177 but have both.
crosman has entry level rifles for $100. i have a storm.
it shoots decent. 900fps 7.9 grain in .177.
surf on pyramyd and look around.  |

I had one too - wound up giving it to a neighbor kid (actually to the father to stay legal). The 880 is inexpensive, but it works. Lots of plastic and stamped sheet metal in there, plus you spend a lot of time pumping and not much shooting. Some people don't mind that part.
A little more money will get a lot more gun. |

Diana 34 in .177
The stock iron sights work fairly well. Mine came with a 4x32 scope. |

Depends on the "small game" and distance usually. In the Airgun Digest, 2nd Edition, Jess Galan wrote a Chapter on the subject and stated the minimum for game should be 4 ft-lbs at point of impact for game like squirrel and rabbit size. Rats/mice can probably get by w/ 3 ft lbs, but rats can be tough. Now if you're trying for bigger animals, groundhog or Raccoon, adjust the powerscale of FPE upwards accordingly. |

For animals jackrabbit size or larger.... the generally accepted MINIMUM energy is 1 FPE per pound of body weight with a WELL PLACED SHOT.... that is the power delivered to the target, not at the muzzle.... Don't even THINK about Raccoons with anything less than a Magnum Springer in .22 cal or larger.... For those you are into the .22 rimfire CB Cap or Short HP power range....
There are lots of good Springers around the $100-$200 price range.... Most advertised at 1000 fps in .177 give about 860ish (~13 FPE) and the equivalent gun in .22 (advertised at ~800 fps) give about 680ish (~15 FPE).... With good pellets, either gun will deliver ~10 FPE out to 40-50 yards.... with the .22 having more "smack" for hunting.... I have a Diana 34 in .177 and love it.... sniper has a BAM B-26 (clone of an HW-95) in .22 and likewise loves it....

| The only springer I have seen actually meet the 1000FPS in .22 is the Falcon Hunter. Airgunweb did a review and it chrono'd at 995 FPS with a 14.3g pellet. Not really in the price range you were looking for, but if your snowed in with no food you could kill a turkey with that. |

Hatsan Mod 125 .22 = Falcon hunter .22

I forgot to mention that the on reviewed was a nitro piston conversion. I think I saw Eric mention that the piston reduces FPS by about 10% also. SO I guess you can look at it like this.....pick two....FPS, accuracy, cheap. You only have 2, if you want it fast and accurate it wont be cheap. If you want it accurate and cheap it wont be fast. If you want if fast and cheap it wont be accurate. |

I recently purchased a Walther Talon with nitro conversion(Falcon and Talon are virtually the same). It shoots Crossman premiers 14.3gr at 980 and H&N 21gr at over 800, not sure if this matters but the crono i used was designed for airsoft guns. This thing packs a serious punch, the recoil is much greater than any other pellet rifle i have ever fired! I purchased it with the intentions to attempt to turkey hunt with it!
Also it seems to like pellets 18gr and heavier! |
