Hola amigos, This is my first post here....so be gentle. 
I just bought a Gamo Whisper this afternoon so I could shoot it in my backyard without scaring my neighbors.
I took it out there and shot at a steel pellet trap about 80' away. BLAM!!!
It was so LOUD! I almost soiled my boxers.
I took it inside quickly expecting a call from my neighbors who know I'm a firearms instructor and may be worried about a negligent discharge.
The Whisper advertises that it reduces noise up to 52%..... but mine was literally as loud as a .22 rifle.
Is my Gamo Whisper defective? Does anyone here have one? What are your experiences with it? |

| its more then likely because your spring is new it should go away after you break it in but others on this site will be better at telling you what it is exactly |

| If you are shooting the PBA ammo that comes w/the Whisper it will be loud no matter what since its likely breaking the sound barrier. Also, from what I've heard, the Whisper is just as loud to the shooter, but the report your neighbors hear should be somewhat quieter. At any rate, I doubt it will ever live up to its name. |

Did you see any smoke or smell anything burning? It may have dieseled (detonated petroleum based lubricants in the chamber). If it dieseled and in combination with PBA pellets, you could have quite a loud discharge there.
It once occurred by accident to me. Too much petrol based solvent in the bore (after cleaning), the next shot (a month later  ) sounded like a .22WMR. |

Come to think of it, the barrel was smoking after I shot it..... I noticed the smoke and was blowing it out the front of the barrel from the breach end.
To be honest, I can't remember which pellet I shot. But I'm pretty sure that it was!
I never cleaned the barrel before I shot it. Does it come pre-lubed from the factory?
Could this be my problem? |

Well, there's your problem right there. Anybody knows you blow across the muzzle, just like Roy Rogers.
Only kidding. The guys have covered the probable causes for the noise. Could be the "crack" from a supersonic pellet, could be detonation of lubricant ahead of the piston, or it could be bone conduction of the action's vibration.
That last one is easy to check - just have someone shoot it while you stand alongside. If it's supersonic, you're probably using the PBA pellet. Slow it down by shooting something heavier. If it's detonation, hopefully you will have expelled the excess lubricant "fuel" shortly.
Another reason for going to a heavier pellet is accuracy. Airgun pellets are both drag and spin stabilized, and pushing air ahead of the pellet in a supersonic shock wave ruins the drag part. They have a low ballistic coefficient, so they bleed energy and in short order they pass through the trans-sonic velocities. There they get the wobbles with the shock wave forming and dissipating at random. Better to use a heavier pellet and stay subsonic.
And then there's piston braking. A heavier pellet will allow a cushion of air to build up before it starts moving. Without that cushion the piston can slam into the cylinder head.
Crud in the barrel probably won't contribute to noise, but may reduce accuracy. It's easy to clean; take a look here:
