Exactly Bob, and that for a pump that is really only useful for filling a gun, not a tank. I guess the reason there is no commercially produced option is market size, I don't know. There is nothing about these pumps that requires super expensive processes or componants to build. Heck, on a commercial level you can buy top quality 1/2 horse motors for $60-$70, and I'd bet that would be the most expensive component.
I know one thing for sure though. If a guy with the ability did design a great little pump, it would get sent to china to be knocked off before he ever had a chance to market it, and he would lose his a$$. If it happens it will have to be someone like Crosman with the money to deal with that. Everybody cheers for chinese clones, but they never stop to think how many things they never get the benefit of because of that dirty racket.

I think the main cost of power compressors for charging scuba tanks is the compressor unit, this consists of a four stage compressor which is four different size compressors linked together in one block, and when you take into account the precision these are built to you can appreciate the final cost, things like a motor, electrics, and frame are relatively cheap.
You can sometimes buy ex military ones cheap and these will run all day with no problems, apart from the truck you need to transport it.

very cool, thanks for the link. I knew someone must have done it before.
I was thinking of using low pressure linear air cylinders to actually pump the high pressure pump. This would mean no electric motor would be necessary (so you could take it outside), just a low pressure air compressor, which could be run off a car battery...I'm sure it would be loud and wastefull though.
you are right about the chinese likelly making a copy. But that won't stop us from makeing an open source version....In fact it might encourage it. Anyone know what the max force is on a hand pump, when you are pumping at 3000psi? |
