Hello everyone I'm new around here and planning on picking up a RWS 350 Mag for some small game hunting. I have been looking around for pellets. I seen on Pyramydair.com they tested it..."Tech specs: Our tech department tested the .22 rifle with a 14-grain pellet and got 850 fps. Lighter pellets will deliver higher velocities, heavier pellets will deliver lower velocities." They used a 14-grain pellet, I seen another pellet that seems like it would be great which is the Predator Polymag but its a 16-grain pellet. So my question is would that pellet be alright for my choice of gun, or would I lose out using that heavy of a pellet?

Thanks
-Scrap

welcome,

preds are awesome! very devastating on small game.
a magnum springer -the 350- shouldn't be fed anything heavier than 18 grains IMO.

16 grains should still be flying at or over 800fps.

Great answer I was hoping to get a good answer on this. It took me forever to find a forum that's up to date. Well thanks again for your help.

you can also try beeman crow mags-18.2 grain.
losing velocity doesn't mean you lose killing power.
with a heavier pellet (within the guns limitations)
you will gain a higher fpe (foot pounds of energy)
which is how killing power is measured.

plus with a heavier pellet you have more retained energy
on target. Wink

I hear ya, basically sure I'll lose velocity but the impact of the higher grain pellet will be greater. Not saying I will lose tons of velocity.

i have a .22 springer in the same power range. (tech force 89)

i kiss 900 fps with 11.9 grain rws hobbies.
14.3 run 800-815 fps
16 preds around 760
18.2 crow mags around 725
21.1 kodiaks around 690.
28.4 eun jins around 535.

the 16-18 grain is the happy medium for a rifle of this power level.
you want the balance of velocity/weight to get the highest fpe.
of course with the mot accuracy. Cool

Do ya think the Diana RWS 350 Mag is a good choice? I also found a scope I'm looking to get something that will give me range. This is what I came up with Leapers 6-24x50 Varmint Scope w/ Illuminated Reticle And Adjustable Objective. Link if ya want..http://www.airgundepot.com/leapers-air-rifle-scope-338.html#

Not to sure on this stuff yet still learning.

i've never shot a 350. Neutral it is a scope killer due to the heavy spring recoil. from what i know they are well made and the top of the food chain for a mag springer.

a question... are you experienced with springers?
there is a technique to shooting them accuratly.
the 350 is a massive gun and will have very heavy 2 way recoil. Twisted Evil

others will chime in. Wink
if your not sure, do more research. hang out a while.
buyers remorse really sucks. Rolling Eyes

i always jump on the threads where my chrony knowledge applies. Cool
mmm mmm mmm i love my chrony. Cool

Well to tell ya the truth this will be my first one. But I don't really want to start out with a small gun that's not gonna pack the punch I'm looking for. I figure after plenty of shooting practice I will to alright I think.

That's a lot of scope for an airgun for anything except Field Target (FT) shooting.... Unless you are shooting from a rest, I think you will find anything over 12X complete overkill.... I personally use 3-9X for most guns.... 4-12X if you want to really reach out.... Wink

Just keep one thing in mine any pellet
is only as good as the gun shots it,,,,
Not any gun will shot any pellet acruately..
A good dome is as good as any pellet..
JSB or H&N are as good as any...

I know I would like to have a powerful gun. Seems like the RWS has what I'd like. But are there better choices? PCP and such for a first timer?

I would have a serious look at the JSB Jumbo Exact series.... the 14.3 gr. Exact Express, 15.9 gr. Exact, and the 18.0 gr. Exact Heavy.... Every single gun I have likes at least one of those three, if not all of them.... They are true round nose pellets, and as such, have some of the best Ballistics Coefficients around.... That is very important once you get over about 25 yards, as the better BC delivers more energy to the target.... They also make the 16.0 gr. Predator, which some guns like.... mine all seem to prefer the Exact series.... Cool

At the velocities you will see with the 350 Mag, the Express will have a BC of about 0.030, the Exact about 0.035, and the Heavy about 0.040.... By comparison, the Predator will be about 0.020.... If you compare an Exact and a Predator (same weight) both starting at ~790 fps (22 FPE) the Exact will still have about 15.4 FPE remaining at 50 yards while the Predator will be down to about 11.8 FPE.... nearly a 25% difference.... Shocked

So I should stick with the RWS just change pellets. Also I'm a noobie and need a little help with your term "BC"...
