Hello everyone,

This is my first post here so I'll go ahead and thank everyone for their help.

I have a model 48 that is 10-15 yrs old. I had not shot it in quite some time. I have knocked the dust off of it and been shooting it occasionally. Every thing seemed ok until a couple days ago. The rifle's accuracy seemed inconsistent, I figured it was the shooter and didn't think anything of it. A day or so later I got it out and it would not shoot. When shot, it sounded like the piston was stopping before full travel and then I could hear air leaking from some where and then the piston would move some more. The pellet did not move at all and the barrel is clear.

Any ideas?

Makes little sense if the barrel is clear, my first thought was two pellets stacked up in there.... Rolling Eyes

Maybe the transfer port is plugged with dried out lube?.... Question

Well, I just took it apart... The main spring is broke in 4 pieces. I guess its time for a rebuild. While I have it apart what all should/can I do to it?

Jim Maccari is one of, if not the, leading producer of aftermarket airgun springs in the US. Search the site for a spring that would fit your gun, then shoot him an email to double check. JM will get you set up right.

Make sure that if your spring doesn't come in a package with his "heavy tar", that you get some. Maybe some clear tar if you plan to work on the gun's trigger while its apart.

You'll need a spring compressor to put it all back together *safely*. http://www.kermitairgunclub.com/projects/

There's a link to a simple one that you can easily make, click the link in the MS word section about spring compressors. I made my own design (that I don't have pictures or plans for) in about 45 minutes with minimal effort.

There are a lot of things you can do, but while you're in there:
De-burr/smooth any rough or sharp edges inside the compression tube. Dab at the muzzle with a cotton swab - if it grabs fibers you can polish the muzzle crown. Check the piston seal for any tears, cracks, or gouges. Re-lubricate with moly paste (or Maccari's "tar" if it buzzes or "twangs").

A schematic:

For $75.00 USD you can get the spring, guides, and some tar:

Or $20.00 USD for just the spring:
http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251488/6343594.htm

Lubricants:
http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/page/page/251484.htm

Piston seals:

Amen to using a spring compressor.

I ordered the the full power kit with seals(and tar) yesterday. If Maccari is even half as good as reputation, I think I will be pleased.

What can you do with the trigger?

I'd first find a schematic and a large ziplock bag.

Put the trigger assembly in the bag and disassemble. The hope being any springs that want to fly away get caught in the bag. Its almost a guarantee that any spring which go flying, will not be found- ever.

Hone EVERY surface that contacts another. Properly lubricate with a low viscosity product (I like white-lithium grease), white or clear lubes are preferred. Use a q-tip or even a tooth pick to dab it on, just enough that it forms a thin film. I also lubricated (with even less) the pivot holes where pins go (except on the housing block). Carefully reassemble.

Fritz,
That sounds good I'll give that a shot. (Know where I can find a schematic)
As I look over the rest of the parts, I am not real impressed with the machine work, especially the piston and the rod inside of it. Has anyone on here made their own? I was thinking of making one out of aluminum. Lighter would be better....right?

Not sure about piston weight. Don't worry about it just yet.

I can't seem to find a schematic, I bet Slavia has one floating around. It's not complicated, but if you feel any doubts, don't take it apart.

My dealings with him have been entirely satisfactory. You place an order, he sends it out quick, and you get what you expected.

It's in my previous post. As an aside, when I'm looking for a schematic I use Google, Yahoo!, Excite, Altavista, etc. to do an image search. Crank up the number of thumbnails per page so you can go through a bunch of images in a hurry. The schematics (if there are any) stick out because they just don't look like a photo.

As with transfer ports, pistons are not something I've ever been motivated to modify. Too heavy and they start slow and then slam into the cylinder head. Too light and they start fast but bounce off the cushion of air. I leave them alone. Somebody smarter than me must have already thought through it. There is probably a lot you can do to improve the existing piston - thrust washers, fitted spring guides, maybe buttoning.

Good advice. Just be careful that you don't grind so much that you change angles, and don't round over the sharp edges where the parts "break" on discharge. I have also made thin shim washers from empty cans to remove side play.

The Diana 48 comes with a plastic trigger. So think about that before you are going of polishing.

Caliber might be good to know too. If it's a .177, you should shoot something heavy, like Baracuda Extra Heavies.

You could lightly polish the piston but I wouldn't try making one myself. And the rod wasn't fixed in mine either, it seems to have been designed like that. Neutral

On the TO5 (you should have a TO1), when all assembled you need to put it on fire, and pull the trigger to reset it. Then cock the gun for the first time. I must have taken my 34's trigger group apart and assembled it 5 times before I figured that out. Not sure if the TO1 has that problem, but you can't go wrong doing so.

Broom- the TO1 trigger blade is supposed to be metal.

Hmmm, you seem to be right. I assumed it was made of plastic because I once had a good time with a Diana 46 that was at least 10 years old and that trigger was a glorious piece of plastic. Neutral

I think that when properly tuned and adjusted the TO5 can be very good. Even though it is a pseudo two stage.
