hey everyone

i disassembled my phantom to clean it up and i noticed that there is a hole in the compression tube assembly where the 2 stock mounting screws go into the breach end of the comp tube assembly i can see the metal that has been pushed into the assembly from the screw holes and when i looked through the treaded holes sure enough i could actualy see through it, now the hole isnt big but it is there none the less and whats worse is it is difficult to remove that little burr. now im sure with locktight and a screw in it im probably not losing air through that little hole but it is where the piston seal meets the end of the assembly when fired and im thinking that cant be good for the seal.

i have no doubts ill figure out a way to clean that burr out but i was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing in their guns.

have a good one

Is it that the screw holes actually penetrate the transfer port, or are you seeing into the screw hole on the other side? A photo would help.

ill try to get a picture of it today but i dont think its going to be easy to get a picture of a burr all the way down at the far end of the compression chamber, but as far as description goes its not the transfer port itself that has a burr on it, but where the wall of the compression chamber ends...pretty much exactly where the very outside edge of the piston seal hits when the piston it no longer in motion.

Looks like there's a hole drilled in your piston. This must be what Canada considers an "air rifle". The holes are to make it shoot under 500fps.

Looks like grease in the compression tube.

lol that would make it an "air rifle" wouldnt it Smile

thats not the piston the hole you see is the transfer port in the compression tube....no grease either but it does need to be cleaned and lubed properly

I believe you now. Maybe send the photo to Crosman and see what they say about replacing it.

lol im glad you believe me Smile
sigh im in canada and they want me to deal with gravel in quebec and they are hard to get ahold of plus i have yet to find an email address for them, having said that i have only had a few dealings with crosman headquarters and that was just to get a few parts manuals, mabey i should try to email them about this just to see what they say... someone was kind enough to send me crosmans phone number but i couldnt call the toll free number as i have a long distance plan that doesnt seem to let me call 1-800 numbers lol go figure Smile

anyone here happen to have crosmans email address ? last time i tried i hade to look up zip codes and states as they dont have an option for outta country emails and they require you to fill in all the blanks before you can actually send an email (through there web site) and i have since deleted the direct email addresses i had thinking i would never need to contact them again Rolling Eyes

Not to be a nay-sayer, but I doubt Crosman would be too happy to help you. Technically you broke their warranty by disassembling the gun. Now of course they would still be happy to sell you the products you need. Crosman does this because some idiots can't put guns back together properly.

If you want to convert the gun into a "Canadian firearm" by welding the holes shut, then you could. I assume you have your firearms permit so you are covered legally.

hey fritz how are ya
yeah i kinda have my doubts about them replacing anything cause i had to take it apart to notice they screwed it up.

i do have the canadian firarms permit (called a PAL here in canada, short for Posession and Aquisition License) but the very round hole you see in the first pic is supposed to be there its how the air gets to the pellet from the compression chamber, its called a transfer port the dark spot you see above and to the left of the transfer port is a hole that was put there by sloppy workmanship as it is actually a threaded screw hole for mounting the stock to the compression chamber and is NOT supposed to go into the compression chamber...picture number 2 is the outside of the compression chamber showing that same threaded screw hole.
this model of air gun is de-tuned (500 fps or less) or kept from being high power by a different piston design than the high power model (1000 fps) so it really has nothing to do with that hole you are able to easily see, and if you weld it the gun wont work at all cause the air wont be able to get from the piston to the pellet, and if you weld the hole you see in picture number 2 you wont be able to screw the stock to the compression chamber...
i know the pictures kinda sucks but i hope my description helps

Oh dear, I didn't mean to say weld your transfer port shut! Shocked I was thinking you could somehow plug the excess in the screw holes.

All of my rifles use a bracket shaped like an upside-down U to go to the stock. The base of the U screws into the compression tube at the underside, then on the sides of the U there are tapped holes which the stock screws fit.

lmao well dont i feel silly i thought that was exactly what you were saying...sorry i misunderstood Embarassed

yeah the one i have is the crosman phantom .22 500fps and it actualy mounts a little different than what im used to, there are 2 screws at the front and one at the back, the 2 at the front go directly into tapped holes at a 45 degree angle and the one at the back is up behind the trigger in the trigger gaurd.
now the 2 at the front normaly wouldnt even enter the compression chamber even if they did go too far in by accident cause there is a fair chunk of metal at that end but the one screw hole got tapped at a bit of an angle so it actually did manage to punch through, not by much its only the very edge of the crew hole that makes it that far the rest of the screw hole is in the solid part of metal that the transfer port is drilled through, just like it is supposed to be, and i think with lock tight and the stock screw in place there is no air actually getting through that little bit of hole but the problem i have with it is that is exactly where the edge of the seal at he end of the piston hits when its been fired so with that little burr there it has to be messin up my seal and its a bugger to get in there to clean the burr of without actually damaging the rest of the compression chamber at that end so i think trying to get the burr out with something like a cylinder hone is a bad idea

Gamo tap straight into the tube aswell...
to debure it use a flapper wheel...
same as the flapper disc but round instead of flat..

You will need to make the shaft longer....
I use them to debur my guns...beats scrathing around with
a dremal or die grinder...& takes about a minute..
