Here's a pic of a recent night hunt on Guam.
Got this guy as he was moving through a Mango tree.
Measured him at 7'10" and it's the biggest one I've seen, so I called
the Dept. of Ag here to see if it's a record, but they have gotten
them over 8 feet. It's a brown tree snake, and the only snake
found on the island. No other species exist. Only slightly
venomous but the venom is delivered through their back teeth
as they are engulfing their victim. Chickens are a favorite meal.
The rifle is a cheap Daisy Powerline 880 that I've had for some time.
It's perfectly suited for this job. The snakes fall quickly if you hit
them just at the back of the head, as this one was.

oh,,,,it's not such a great shot... took this guy at probably 7 or 8 yards.... the jungle here is pretty thick.. not much in the way of long range shooting, heh heh....
You get challenged sometimes if you spot one up on the high tension power
lines......a shot like that would be 30 yards or so... |

Yea.. it's fun.... go out at night,,, spot em in the trees..
you never see one during the day....they hide well. At night
they are on the move and easier to spot.....
You notice my 880 has no light.... Sometimes I take
my spotter (grandson) and he illuminates the target
for me, but if I'm alone, I just hold the flashlight in my
left hand the rest the forearm on top of it. Not the best
solution to a problem, but hey, whatever works, right? |

No rattlers here, Roger, but you'd enjoy yourself with
the air shotty over here... The brown trees snakes would
fall like rain with that thing on 'em. heh heh |

Only thing to shoot around here at night is raccoons. I have my "tactical" stuff ready to be installed on one of the springers any day now.
You are brave, for snakes I'd be thinking shotgun as well. I really am not a fan of snakes. |

Especially not 8' snakes.
Knock-knock: "Who's there?"
Emerson: "Emerson who?"
Emerson big snakes you got there on that island.
How do you adapt that rule-of-thumb that says one FPE per pound of animal - one FPE per foot of snake?
Only kidding. That's good shooting - even with a snake that big the target area is still pretty small. |

There really isn't much to shoot around here 'cept the snakes. We hunt
some other things, like the crab pic below, but you don't want to shoot
those. Ya gotta catch 'em and feed 'em coconut for a week or so to clean
'em out.
As for eating the snakes, some folks here do, although I've never personally
tried it. In fact, a couple of years ago the Sunday edition of our newspaper
published a number of recipes. This is just sport for me. The brown tree
snake is not indigenous to the island, no snake is, but it somehow got introduced
and the powers that be would be happy if they were eradicated completely. (Steps
have been taken to accomplish that with poor results.)
And really, they are not that hard to shoot. The 880 is pretty accurate at
these close ranges, and I never shoot freehand if I can help it. Plenty of
trees and such to brace against. heh heh

| I think I'd be more concerned about that crab eating me... I'd probably shoot it just out of self preservation. |
