I had a bit of spare time yesterday so I knocked up this accessory case for a rifle, it contains everything for a days shooting including a stand so you can work on a gun. All it needs now is a coat of varnish.
Eric in the UK we don’t usually work in the garage unless you have no other space, but the English have things called shed’s where all this work is done, they sometimes contain a heater, tea making facilities and if you are lucky a fridge for the beer, and the whole lot is located down the garden so that you can see the wife coming. We even have a TV program dedicated to shed’s it’s called Shedheads so you have got to take them seriously.

The finished case
Everything packed away
Gun stand in use
Some other boxes for pistols

And once again- nice work!
If you can complete a new project almost daily in your "shed", they must indeed be serious business! I have to share my workspace with one of my cars, and 15 tons of stuff I should probably get cleaned up! |

Hey Al
That is one very very smart looking Gun Accessory Case!!!
Is it made from MDF or Natural Wood?? I can't make out the grain in the pictures, Though it looks like MDF.
I do most of my work in my Dad's Garage! Though My Dad commonly reveres to it "The workshop", The Car(s) live outside now!!, The Shed is packed full of Mountain bikes and all that and isn't as big as the Garage,
Tea making facilities would be nice!!

Well there you go, I can't even get my car in the garage, it has to live on the drive, the garage is full of junk at least the wife calls it junk I call it a valuable resource.

Yes Stevie It's MDF it glues together very fast using PVA glue so is ideal for quick work. I find trying to get some decent wood costs the earth these days so MDF it is, mind you if I lived in Canada I could pop into the woods and get all the wood I need, after you had shot all the grizley bears and kyote's etc.

You know- I've been in the Canadian woods a few times and I've never seen raw 2x4s or 1/2" plywood just laying about! |

Sorry- maybe my joke wasn't very clear! The joke was that you don't find plywood and cut wood laying on the ground! Raw lumber is all over- but "big" lumber- i.e. 12"+ diameter stuff that is from trees 50+ years old is gone virtually everywhere within 200 miles of heavily populated areas- if you want large, solid lumber- you have to head into mainly unpopulated areas. But, even once you've got a source of lumber that is adequate for your purposes- it still needs to be sawn/cut to size, which isn't cheap either. Except for a few small-sized lumber companies/sawmills here and there- the lumber business, like many things these days, is mainly "big corporate" activity using heavy machinery, granted resource rights from government, etc. etc.

MDF= 'medium density fiberboard' or glued-together sawdust 'wood'. You can buy it at any hardware outlet- Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's, Tru-Value, wherever. |

I thought you had plywood trees over there, and what happend to the chip board pine which used to grow in the rockys. Hi 23ib0d0N as Eric said it's just compressed saw dust, but you have to wear a dust mask if you are cutting it, otherwise you get some nasty disease, but it's cheap.

Aha ! ! Gorilla snot coated dust . . . The term is 'particle board' in the lumber yards around here. I had a hunch . . .
Stuff costs a blue fortune around here compared to OSB {oriented strand board} or yellow pine laminate {knotty plywood} and only the hardwood plyboard and sheathing board cost more. Do y'all have the market cornered on inexpensive epoxy? |

Dude- your lumber yards are falling behind the times. "Particle board" is out- and LDF, MDF or HDF is "in" (Low Density Fiberboard, Medium Density Fiberboard, High density Fiberboard). People got wise to how crappy particle board is/was- especially if it got wet (technically, particle board was what is now the "LDF" stuff) so some genius decided to change the name to make it sound all wonderful! And you're right it isn't generally "cheap" unless you get the really thin stuff- but usually cheaper than plywood or reasonable quality board lengths.
I wouldn't try building anything like a box out of OSB- too rough- but maybe someone should try it and let us know! |

Hi 23ib0d0n, I don't think we have cornered the market in partical board, the problem is we import most of our timber and it is very expensive so it is probably cheaper tonmake MDF, an 8x4x1/2" SOB sheet costs the equivalent of 22$ Canadian over here. Anyway I thought you had plenty of timber in Canada every time we see a picture of Canada it is of a tree covered moutain.
