I recently had this gun brought to me as the owner noticed it not shooting as it normally did. I took a few shots with it and about the 4-5 shot it jammed on the cocking stroke and did not cock, maybe a inch or two short of where it needed to be. I was assuming it was the spring, and removing the stock verified this...

The gun was used a decent amount of times with this broken spring as it was jammed into the rear spring guide...

Here is the broken spring, and the Vortek replacement spring that was used in its place...

The seal was in decent condition, but owner said for the money the seal costs I might as well replace it while its apart...a Vortek replacement seal was used

Against my advice the owner only allowed me to buy and install the spring and seal in opposition to the entire tune kit, his choice, obviously, at a $59 increase in just parts. As I suspected the rear spring guide was no longer up for the task, and under the pressure of the new spring, it split right where the smaller tube meets the spring seat Rolling Eyes I knew it was no good, but I guess the rear spring guide will only be a few dollars...

The owner didn't hear the grinding/dragging and scraping noises this likely was making when the spring broke?

I guess not, he told me that "one day it just lost power"

The other weird part is that the biggest section of the spring was still functioning and the first few shots I took with the rifle it felt fine, the velocity was low at 650FPS with light pellets, but I thought it was the seal. Then after about 3-4 more shots I felt it jam while cocking it, I knew that probably the spring wound into itself...

It's weird how some people will come to you for help, listen to what you have to say, then not follow your advice Laughing I told the guy that rear spring guide needed to be replaced, and advised him to just buying the Vortek tune kit as it would improve the rifle beyond a new spring/seal anyway. But no, he did not want to do that, on the 9-10 shot I heard a really funky twang after taking a shot......bang, rear sping guide snaps right where the small tube meets the spring seat Yes Nod Rolling Eyes

Welcome to doing repairs for other people. Sometimes, doing it "your" way and not the way the customer would like it done is really the only way. You can refuse the work if you suspect it will cause you extra effort, irritation and conflict with the customer when things don't go perfectly. I have had issues with this as well- but have finally given up and tell people- "it's this way, or go somewhere else". They may not like the fact their repair is more than $10- but at least the repair will be complete and do its job so they don't have more issues in the near future.

Just as an example, I gave up selling individual parts for Crosman springer repairs- it just confused alot of people and took alot of extra talking about nothing to have some customers determine what they really needed- so all the required parts for such work became a "kit"- if someone wants only one part separate from a "kit"- I will sell it, but will not offer it up if not asked directly.

Very true, that makes sense...

I think the customer now see`s that I was right, as he waits patiently for a new spring guide to come in, and for me to take apart the gun again... Wink Rolling Eyes
