I got a couple of Disco hammer springs today, to compare to the three types I already have.... from stiffest to weakest:

Discovery Spring # 1761-009
2100/2200 Spring # 2200A032
13XX / 2289 Spring # 781A051
2240/50/60 Spring # 782-024

They are virtually all interchangeable within those guns, dimensionally.... The 2200 spring is the longest when uncompressed.... The 2289 spring is the longest at coil bind.... Cool

I also got a Disco valve.... Internally, it is virtually identical to the 2240/50/60 valve.... except it has no piercing pin, a slightly larger OD valve poppet that is thicker (hence more spring preload) and the inlet is much larger.... It apprears to have the same spring.... The threads are the same, and 2240/50/60 parts will interchange with the Disco parts.... Wink

Externally it looks quite different, of course.... The front end is longer and seals to the tube with 2 O-rings.... at the back, the valve body is a bit longer, with an O-ring on the valve stem.... It is located in the tube with three 8-32 screws instead of the single 6-40 screw.... The end of the valve stem is the same distance aft of the transfer port as the 2240/50/60 valve however.... Very Happy

Bob

What happens if you put a disco hammer spring into a 22xx? That should give you some serious power.

That would answer my question about a stronger hammer spring for my 2300. Now I need a lighter valve spring. Not so light that the valve leaks, but lighter then the stock spring.

Jaxom, I'd stick with just the hammer for now. What I imagine a disco spring would do, the lighter valve would just be overkill (especially on the critters). Razz

I'm not sure, but the hammer spring on a 2300 may be quite different from the 22XX series guns.... The parts diagram Eric posted showed the spring as much shorter.... He had a 2300 valve apart, and they have a restrictor sleeve inside (cuts down the volume and also restricts the flow).... and the spring is about half the stiffness of the spring inside a 22XX valve....

I made a sleeve like that in a 2300 valve, and tried it in my 2250.... It doesn't change things much with the velocity adjuster cranked up, but it makes the adjuster "work better".... ie there is a greater range of adjustment to lower velocities.... Since this is a feature of the 2300s, my guess is that the combination of the sleeve, lighter valve spring and (probably) lighter hammer spring combine to do two things:

1. - Make the trigger release easier

2. - Make the velocity adjuster work over a wider range (allowing you to conserve CO2)

I wouldn't just assume that changing to a heavier hammer spring will work without making other changes in a 2300.... even the stock 2240 spring might hold the valve open all the time.... Shocked

The same might happen with a Disco hammer spring in an otherwise stock 22XX.... one thing for sure, it would waste even MORE gas.... Rolling Eyes

rsterne,

I'm going to assume you haven't read either of my threads in the pistol forum. The first I'm discussing and asking for the best parts to customize this pistol further.

To save time, I'm not going to rehash everything I've mentioned there again here. I will say though, that I'm not just thinking of replacing the hammer spring and valve spring.

Directly related to this discussion about the hammer/valve springs. In as much I'm planning on bulking this pistol, I've decided to go with a Boss Mass Flow valve, inside of which I'm going to replace the stock valve stem with a delrin one.

To the best of my knowledge, much of which comes from reading as much as I can off these forums. The 2300 series is Crosman's designation for the Custom department for the 22xx series. I could however be wrong about this.

HI Jaxom....

I have been following your thread with interrest in the other forum.... and it looks like an interesting project.... The only point to my comment was the from my limited knowledge of the 2300 platform is seems to have some significant differences from the 22XX.... especially regarding the springs....

I could be completely wrong about the hammer spring being different.... but I did try a spring similar to the 2300 valve spring inside a 22XX valve and the stock hammer spring held it open.... YMMV....

Here is the thread which Eric posted about the valve differences:

okay, let me repeat again... I'm going to be using the Boss Mass Flow valve.... This makes any reference to the 2300 stock valve in my case, unapplicable.

Me Bad.... Embarassed .... DUH !!!.... Shocked Mr. Green

You might, however, find the testing I did on hammer springs today interesting....

http://airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=2651&start=15

I've never used a Max-Flow valve.... but in my limited experience, 22XX guns are very wasteful of CO2, especially if you try to get every last fps from them.... Heavier hammer springs are one of the things that tend to waste gas.... Rolling Eyes

That's why I'm going bulk Co2/HPA. Heck with carts! That'd be too expensive. FPS don't mean as much as Fpe when it comes to hunting. That's why I went with a .22 cal.
