My friend has a older Benjamin 397. It has walnut stock and is like 4 or 5 years old. When we pump up the gun the air exits quickly. We dont even have to open up the pump either. We pump like 5 times. Close the pump. And in like 15 seconds 3/4 of the air is gone. I thought it was the seals. But my dad said if it holds air at first then the check valve might have trash in it. Want to know what it is before we take it apart.

Could be dirt keeping the valve from a perfect seal or it may just need a new stem seal.
Is the gun stock?

Well start with a few drops of Pelgun oil in the pump tube and pump it a few times to work it into the valve. If this doesnt work its time to open it up and check the stem seal.

You want to look at the o-rings: 397-036, 397-037, JXT-080 and the pump cup (just to be safe) #397-025
