I was just watching the movie "Quigley Down Under." In the beginning, he nails a 17" bucket at 550 yards, three times in a row.
I figure a 2.6" Coca-Cola can at 84 yards gives the same angular displacement, and it's within reach of an airgun.
I"m going to give it a try, but I'll skip the part where the guys at the range leave me for dead. |

Not much; I fell asleep during the movie.
Oh, I get it - RWS 8.3 grain Superdomes @ 900 FPS, or about 15 FPE.
But that's beside the point. If energy is a limiting factor, this could just as well be done with spent 9mm casings at 12 yards. That would give the same proportion of target to range as a 17" bucket at 550 yards, or a pop can at 84 yards. |

Last year I tried somthing similar, where I shoot there is a clearing which is 86 yards across, and shooting .177 8.5gram AA fields at 780 fps at a A4 target was difficult, maximum power was 11,5 flb and spread 6" inches.
To do any better I would need a lot more power, I find the maxinum killing range for my TX200 for small vermin is 35 yards, provided I have a good shooting position, I think my biggest problem is heartbeat at long range.

The biggest problem here is wind. South Dakota exports a lot of it to Minnesota, and the prevailing direction quarters my club's range. The only time I can shoot in a dead calm is at sunset on a summer night, otherwise it's omnipresent.
We have a pistol range that was excavated into the side of a hill, and those 50 yards are sheltered. Past that and I'm out in the open. |

A 9mm case is about the size of many AAFTA targets. In a field target match a 9mm case at 12 yards would be considdered an easy shot. In the USA they allow 20 FPe but in international they only allow 12 FPe. My field target practice knock down has a variable target size fron 1/4 inch thru 1 1/4 inch. Of course Quigly was not using a 50 power scope, LOL |
