Would it work if you put the washers in the piston? And wouldn't this increase the velocity a bit? I don't understand how this would affect the hold sensitivity of the gun. Enlighten me please!

When a coil spring in an airgun expands (and contracts), the ends
rotate in oppisite directions. Hold sensitivity occures if the spring
ends are not alowed to rotate freely. Then the ends of the spring
will gain traction and twist the gun to varying degrees each time
that it is shot. The thrust washers enable the spring ends to rotate
freely.

When I fist acquired my Patriot, it's recoil was plagued with a very
harsh twist to the right. Installing a thrust washer stack all but
eliminated it. I eventually had to install a gas spring to completely
eliminate it. The stack in the photos were installed in a .22 B26-2.
It was not really all that hold sensitive to begin with, but became
more so after a Maccari HP spring and tesla seal were installed.
The washer stack eliminated it.

Sometimes adding weight to the piston will increase power
by lessening piston bounce at the end of the stroke and making
the piston dwell at the transfer port longer. But this was not the
case with this BAM. I added 7 grams when I first got it and power
went down.

This is why there is an ounce and a half weight in the piston of
OEM Patriots. The weight is removed when the gas spring is
installed. This also gives it a way faster lock time than an OEM
Patriot.

Check the link above,,Doc Frankengun uses this setup on his B4, seem's to do a great job at letting the spring move freely, and reset itself.
I just changed the spring in my .22 B4 today,,I wish I would of remembered this before I put everything back together. Oh well, I may be changing this spring for a Quest 1000 spring this summer, I think I'll try this setup next time I have the gun apart. Cheer's, Andy.

My R9(HW95) has always had a little "twist" upon shooting, so I am going to try the stacked washer bearings.

Question How thick can the stack be before the spring bottoms out ? And, would it help to also smooth and polish the spring ends ?

Polishing the spring ends can help, sometimes, a lot.
The only limit that I have run into is if too many washers
are added the piston cannot travel far enough back to
engage the sear and the gun will not cock. Make sure to lap
the washers to each other or they might not turn freely.
