The Canadian Federal Government has decided they MIGHT extend the current amnesty to register currently unregistered 'firearms' (this includes all airguns with a velocity of 500fps or greater, and muzzle energy over 4.2fpe) without legal or financial penalties:

The email address not listed (coincidence?) is: Amnesty-amnistie@cfc-cafc.gc.ca
The idea here is that if anyone would like to see an extension of the current amnesty (to May 16, 2008) they need to communicate this to the Canadian Firearms Centre. Apparently- if no public support is shown for it- there will be NO extension. A lack of action of this could also easily be seen by the government as Canadians "giving up" on gun issues, and more specifically, the desired elimination of the Registry entirely.
As most Canadians find the existing firearms registry system to be, at best a huge expenditure of money and at worst a complete waste of time, money and energy and an invasion of peoples freedoms and rights- it would be prudent for people to communicate with the CFC that an amnesty extension is appropriate.
The reason for this is not to suggest that a lot of people have guns that need a further amnesty period for them to be in compliance with the law- but to show the federal government that gun owners are not "sleeping at the wheel" on any firearms issue; thus they shouldn't try to do whatever they please (such as the current government ignoring its own repeated promises to eliminate the registry).
Send you view to the CFC before April 21, 2007:

Your note could be similar to one like this (you can copy it word-for-word and send it yourself if you want):
"In respect to the question of extending the existing firearms amnesty to May 16, 2008; this is the very least that is appropriate, in my opinion.
While I personally am not in violation of any part of the Canada Firearms Act or the Criminal Code- The existence of the gun registry is still a point of issue with me and many other law-abiding Canadians.
I am one of many who are still seeking to have the wasteful and rather dubious "Firearms Registry" eliminated completely. A large number of regular Canadians are still involved and active in attempting to see the dismantling of the Registry and its associated bureaucracy. No proposed legislation or policy changes in respect to firearms and the Registry have escaped our notice. This letter is being sent to you to both encourage the amnesty extension, and to indicate we are not bored with the issue and will continue to pursue the Registry's elimination." |
