This is a list of cities/municipalities that have their own laws or restrictions on the ownership, possession and use of air guns. Check you local laws/by-laws for confirmation as this list may not be complete or comprehensive.
Please post any other areas with air gun restrictions not listed here.
The List:
New York City and its boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Washington DC
Chicago, Illinois has restrictions/bans on owning CO2 powered airguns.
Illinois has laws stating that people cannot buy air guns that exceed 700 ft/sec.
New Jersey: Airguns can be bought through local vendors after acquiring an Airgun Permit. New Jersey law states that "A 'firearm' means any handgun, rifle, shotgun, air gun, gas gun, machine gun, or 'any gun'."
Rhode Island: Airguns can be bought through local vendors after acquiring an Airgun Permit.
Michigan: .177 caliber air rifles and smooth bore air pistols can be bought/owned without restrictions. No air guns (other than those just listed) of any caliber can be bought/owned unless the proper permit is issued by the State and local authorities to the owner/potential owner of such an airgun. Michigan law Sec. 222 "As used in this chapter: (b) 'Firearm' means a gun from which a dangerous projectile may be propelled by an explosive, or by gas or air. Firearm does not include a smooth bore rifle or handgun designed and manufactured exclusively for propelling by a spring, or by gas or air, BB's not exceeding .177 caliber." |

According to Pyramid air guns they can now ship .177, .20 and .22 Cal.rifles to Michigan. There is a note at there web site stating this law change.
Pyramid contacted the Mi.State Police about this matter and were informed of recent changes to the air gun law. They now ship anything you want to buy.
I think this should be made public to the forum. What Ya think?

I don't believe the State of Florida has any restrictions on airguns- but I'm betting that specific counties that cover areas like Orlando and Miami might. |

Where I live, way out in the sticks anything goes as long as you
don't shoot anyone or their property. I nabbed a big skunk in
my back yard a couple of nights ago with my mini 14 and was
congratulated by the local police chief the next day. |

The reason there do not have to be any specific laws for airguns in the state of Mich. is because they are under the same restrictions as firearms excluding .177 & BBs powered by spring, air or gas according to this document. "Thats plenty restricted" Bob. The guys in the UK would like this law because it apparently doesn't govern muzzle energy of .177 or BB airguns. But for the USA it's pretty restricting IMHO. |

In Ohio There is no specific law against airguns, however the town I live in has a law against projectile weapons. None to be fired within city limits. (wink wink) |

Minnesota has pre-emptive laws that regulate types of firearms, and transfer/sales. Local governments can regulate the discharge of guns.
My town banned the discharge of any airguns within the city limits. I got them to change that to permit "instructional or training purposes" (i.e., my 4H kids at the fairgrounds). |

Need to ammend the Illinois law statement. You can own air guns either pistol or rifle that exceed the 700 fps, if you have a current state fire arms card in good standing. This also applies to any gun that are larger in caliber then .177. |

My understanding of "Dirty-Jersy" (NJ) is as follows: you need a firearms ID card to purchase airguns (rifles) within the state. However, there are no restrictions on buying an air rifle out of state. I have purchased several airguns outside NJ, and was never asked for anything other than my credit card. This is a "what happens outside the state, stays outside the state" kind of thing. If I want to purchase a powder burner at a gun show in PA, I have to go through all the NJ rigmarole, even though I'm out of state. Airguns they only want to know about if you take delivery inside the state borders. I am unsure about whether the 14 day waiting period is observed with an airgun, I will try to find out in the next few days.
Secondly, NJ has opened a hunting season for gray squirrel, hare, and cottontail rabbit. You just need a state rifle hunting license, a rifle chambered for .22 or .177 that will do 600FPS+, and to observe the hunting season.
Edit: not a rifle hunting permit, but instead a shotgun hunting permit is needed for airgun hunting in Jersey. Another new development is that now (suddenly) Any "suppressed" rifle, even just a "shrouded barrel," is now ILLEGAL TO POSSESS in NJ. Many Models from Gamo, Umarex, my new Marauder...all illegal...it never ceases to amaze me how the "MICs" (morons in charge) think that being the last one to the party means knowing better than those who've been doing it for years. |

Michigan will not allow sales of any a.g. with a noise reduction device
on the muzzle.
I have an e-friend on a powder forum that wanted an Octane but learned these noise reduction devices are considered "silencers".
Stupid. |
