I'm planning on shooting air guns again and I have questions on BB/Pellet traps since I've never owned any.
I know I what something that handle both BBs and pellets and last a long time, but other then that what else should I look for in a trap?
Do I need a backstop behind the trap?
I have made a trap before years ago using a cardboard box with pieces of carpeting inside it. Worked well with BBs, but don't know if it would with pellets.
Thanks guys. |

My trap is simply a cardboard box with newspaper. The back 6" is solid (newspaper layed in flat) and the front 6" is crumpled balls of newspaper (to catch bounces, especially with BB's). It will stop a .22LR.
The front face and the crumpled balls get chewed up after time. It's a simple matter to tape a new piece of cardboard on the front, and I made a little trap door on the top so I can crumple targets and stuff them in. |

I forgotten about using newspapers. BTW what is the range of BB's and pellets? I will be using .177 caliber only, and maybe 700 fps(mostly well below) tops. |

Depends on the angle you fire, but when you fire about 20° upwards pellets could fly as much as 300 yards at a guess... further if the fps is higher to start with |

I had no idea that .177 pellets could go that far. What about BBs? |

There is a pellet ballistics program called Chairgun. It's free and it's excellent. One of the many things it does is calculate maximum range and barrel angle:

My trap is made by Champion and even works well for .22 lr. Rounds. After several thousand pellets it still works great and even contains Aaliyah the spent pellets for you. Use caution if shooting BB into these steel traps. Very prone to ricochets with the steel BB"s. |
