Hello, are the screws on the Crosman 2240 metric or sae? I would like to change a couple over to Allen head.
Thanks!

All the screws on a 2240 are SAE/Standard, not metric.

They are all standard hardware store fare, except for that little screw that holds the breech to the main tube. That one is a fine thread that most DIY home improvement places won't have. You can get black oxide or stainless finish, and cap, button, or flathead designs. If you go the hardware store route be prepared to cut them to length.

You can also get the screws pre-packaged:

$15.00 might seem a bit steep for a few screws, until you factor in fuel and all the time you might spend in multiple stores agonizing over a stupid screw.

Except in this case the adjective standard modifies the noun fare, which refers to the collective offerings commonly available in a hardware store. To say "fractional fare" would be confusing.

Not only that, but the screw sizes on the Crosman 2240 are expressed in terms of gauge size (eg. #6-32), and therefore are not, strictly speaking, fractional. Additionally, they conform to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers/National Standards Institute "UTS" (universal thread standard - ASME/ANSI B1.2-1983). Jeez Louise!

This discussion would perhaps be easier were we to be located in England, where they have the British Standard Whitworth convention. Easier, because this entire response would be clearly labeled B.S.

N6CRV - just go to the hardware store. They'll have what you want.

Have not heard that word in a long time. Whitworth, If I remember correct the Norton motorcycle used Whitworth. Had to get a wrench set just to fit them. But that is where the Crescent wrench showed it's true worth Smile .
I have a 1911 I did in Black Oxide and it holds up real well. Have a great week-end.
