I'm looking to either sell or trade my 1911 for a good airgun. One guy is offering me this Mauser air rifle + cash:

http://www.palcosports.com/catalog_product.cfm?prod=14800

I don't think Mauser, the old German firearm company, is still in business. Did some Chinese company buy the rights to the name and is selling airguns now? It seems a little fishy to me. Does this look like a clone of another well-known airgun?

I kind of like the thumbhole stock, and I know the 1200 fps is BS, but I would assume 1000 fps is not out of the question.

What are your thoughts on it?

I'm not sure about that. I know they retain their downrange energy better, but for now, this would just be for informal target shooting and plinking.

Also, .22 ammo costs twice as much as .177 ammo.

actually 22 ammo i found great hollow points at walmart for 10 dollars for 500 pellets and i found 177 hollowpoints for 10 dollars also for the same so not much difference but for further target shooting i would recommend a 22 over a 177 or maby even a 58cal lol have u seen thos 700 grain is the max weight of the pellet and can shoot over 900 fps if you get it tuned with 900 foot pounds of energy

I looked the picture over pretty carefully and it looks very much like a B18/19 varient. Hopefully someone else will chime in here

At that price- you can do better.

The last couple of years, more and more "firearm" manufacturers are putting their name on Chinese products- which may not do much for their "brand" depending on what they put their name on.

I agree. It lookes like it originated as a Gamo, then got processed by some chinese and then a guy thought "let's put a neat name on it!".

I found it on another site for $125.

The thing that worries me is that there will be zero after-sale support in case of problems. It would be coming from a gun shop in FL, from a brand that is questionable. I think I'll pass on it.

I'm starting to find out that it is more trouble to be an airgunner in IL than it is worth. (unless one has one's own property) Anything above 18 caliber and 700 fps is considered a firearm, which are regulated like crazy in this nazi state.

I could buy the airgun and go to my gun club to shoot it, but that would be pretty lame. So I need to consider if it is even worth investing in one at all.

Given a .177 at less than 700 fps to keep under the limits imposed by the regulations, you might as well go with something like the QB78 or QB78 Deluxe, both of which are listed at 600 fps, and shoot in your basement or garage. They are CO2 powered, have no recoil and are very accurate over the distances usually possible in basement or garage. That way, you can at least shoot and have a lot of fun at it. Oh, both guns list for less than $100 (usually $99.95 for the 78 Deluxe and $89.95 for the 78 but you can find even better deals at various dealers, Archer Airguns for example, with which I have absolutely no connection).

Also I noted that you said 18 cal AND 700fps. Thats a conjunctive so as long as its .177 you might not be restricted in velocity.

We have a similar conjunctive statement in Canada about the rules governing airguns that messes people up all the time.

And your right about after sales support. Even at $125 I would still buy something like a quest if I was wanting a springer. IMO the quest is hands down one of the best value priced platforms ever made.

FN Fabrique Nationale made the Mausers Looks like every body copys their styles.. or they let em... Personally, They make some nice powderburners, letting their name to cheap airsoft rifles and airguns, must be someone in marketing that thinks they will want the real deal later?

No porn pics of the 1911? lol..

I was thinking the same thing, trade a powder burner in for FX semi...

That first link puts the Mauser at 1200 FPS; here they list two versions - the most powerful at 650 FPS:
http://www.cybergun.com/fr/pub/pub-7/

The front sight is identical to a Xisico offering, which coincidentally is rated at 660 FPS:
http://www.xisicousa.com/xs16.html

It is also curious that from the trigger back it has the same lines as a Crosman Titan (also Chinese).

For $200 I would pass on it. I would hate to risk $200 on a 1200 FPS Mauser only to find it was a 600 FPS Mao-zer.

Mauser is still in business and making limited numbers of very nice bolt action rifles. I think they start at around $5k. Their big plant at Obendorf got leveled in 1945. I'm not sure if they are now located in a different place or if they built a new facility in the same place. Whatever.

This apears to be a typical Chinese air rifle that is branded, just like the "Remington" and the "Ruger" airguns. None of which has ever seen the inside of a factory with their names on the door, just the brand name stenciled on the guns and on the boxes.

I'm kind of disapointed that Mauser is putting their name on a gun like that. I'd think they'd at least get their airguns made by a German company.

In my opinion, not knowing what your 1911 is worth, I'd hold out for a better deal.
